This invention relates to improvements in chairs, and more particularly to a chair having a portion which may be readily converted into a table.

A main object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved convertible chair of simple construction and which is easy to manufacture, said chair having a foldable portion which may be readily extended to form a table.

A further object of the invention is to provide an improved combination chair and table wherein the table portion may be folded into the back of the chair when said table portion is not in use, said table portion being readily extensible when desired and forming a horizontal supporting surface of substantial area. n

Further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description and claims, and from the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Figure 1 is a rear elevational view of the convertible chair of the present invention, said chair being shown with the table portion thereof in folded position;

Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the chair" of Figure 1.

Figure 3 is a vertical cross-sectional view taken through the chair of Figure 1 with the table portion thereof shown in extended position.

Figure 4 is a top plan view of the chair as shown in Figure 3.

Figure 5 is a cross-sectional detail view taken on line 5-5 of Figure 3.

Figure 6 is a cross-sectional detail view taken on line 6 6 of Figure 3.

Referring to the drawings, II designates a chair comprising a seat portion I2, a pair of front legs I3, I3 secured to and supporting the forward end of seat portion I2, and a pair of rear post members I4, I4 secured to. and supporting the rearward end of said seat portion. Securing the upper portions of rear post members I4, I4 are a pair of vertically spaced horizontal bar members I5 and I6, the lower bar member I6 being spaced a substantial distance above seat portion I2.

The lower portions of rear post members I4, I4 are braced together and secured to front legs E3, i3 by conventional chair rangs I1. and by bar members I8 positioned above the rungs I1. Seat portion I2 is provided with a side drawer I9 in which articles may be stored.

Hinged at 24 to lower horizontal bar member I6 and normally depending therefrom in a substantially vertical position is a table top member 2 Claims. (Cl. 155-43) 20, said table top member comprising a fiat table surface 2I having marginal depending side edge elements 22, 22, and a front depending end element 23, defining a cavity with respect to table surface member 2|. When the table member 20 is in inoperative position, a portion thereof adjacent the hinges 24 is received in the space between lower horizontal bar I6 and seat portion l2, as shown in Figure 2. To facilitate the folding of table member 26 to this position a pair of notches 25 are formed in side edge depending elements 22, 22 to receive the rearward part of seat portion I2, thus providing more compact nesting of the table member 20 with respect to seat portion l2.

Pivotally secured to the inner surfaces of side edge depending elements 22, 22 adjacent the Idepending end element 23 remote from hinges 24 are supporting leg members 26, 26 adapted to be nested inside table member 26 When said table member 'is in folded position but movable by gravity to vertical positions when the table member is unfolded to the horizontal position thereof shown in Figures 3 and 4. It will be noted in Figure 1 that the pivotal connections of legs 26 are immediately beneath the table top 20 and that the notches 25 do not extend as far as the under surface of the table top so that, when legs 26 are swung to folded position they lie behind the unnotched part of the depending side elements 22 just above notches 25 and thus avoid interference with the reception of the rear of seat I2 in said notches. Pivotally secured to the outer surfaces of side edge depending elements 22, 22 adjacent the points of pivotal securement of leg members 26, 26 are diagonal brace - members 21, 21. In the inoperative position of table member 26 brace members 21, 21 are swung to substantially vertical positions adjacent the respective post members I4, I4 and secured to said post members by suitable latches. When table member 2U is in unfolded position, as shown in Figures 3 and 4, the free ends of brace members 21, 21 are secured to the lower portions of the respective post members I4, I4 by removable wing bolts 26, 28 which pass through the ends of the brace members and are threadedly engaged with the post members as shown in detail view in Figure 6. The connections are made just below the adjacent horizontal connecting bar member I6 which connects the post members I4, I4. Brace members 21, 21 are effective to rigidly support table member 26 with respect to chair II while leg members 26, 26 resist any tendency for the structure to tip rearwardly when a load 3 is placed on the table. If desired, suitable locking means may be provided to maintain leg members 26, 2B in vertical position when the table is extended.

While a specific embodiment of a convertible chair structure has been disclosed in the foregoing description, it will be understood that various modications Within the spirit of the invention may occur to those skilled in the art. Therefore it is intended that no limitations be placed on the invention other than as dened by the scope of the appended claims.

What is claimed is:

1. A convertible chair comprising a pair of spaced legs, a pair of spaced posts arranged in opposed aligned relation with respect to said legs, a seat having one end supported on said legs and having the other end secured to said posts, a horizontally-disposed bar interposed between said posts and secured to the latter, said bar being positioned above and spaced from said seat, a table member having one end pivotally connected to said bar for movement from an upright depending position to a horizontal positionprojecting rearwardly oi said posts, a leg positioned on each corner of said table member adjacent the other end of the latter and having one end pivotally connected to the adjacent side edge of said table member for movement from a horizontal position in parallel relation with respect to said table member to a vertical position parallel With respect to said posts, a brace member positioned on-each corner of said table member adjacent the other end of the latter and having one end pivotally connected to the adjacent -side edge of said table member for movement from a horizontalposition in parallel relation with respect to said table member to a position extending between said table member and a post adjacent thereto, and means on the other end of each or said brace members for detachably securing the latter when in extended position to the adjacent'posts.

2. A convertible chair comprising a pair of spaced legs, a pair of spaced posts arranged in opposed aligned relation with respect to said legs,

a seat having one end supported on said legs and having the other end secured to said posts, a horizontally-disposed bar interposed between said posts and secured to the latter, said bar being positioned above and spaced from said seat, a table member embodying a top and side elements depending from said top, said table member having the top adjacent one end pivotally connected to said bar rfor movement from an upright depending position to a horizontal position projecting rearwardly of said posts, a leg positioned on each corner of said table member adjacent the other end of the latter and having one end pivotally connected to the inner face of the adjacent side element of said table member for movement from a horizontal position in parallel relation with respect to said table `member to a vertical position parallel With respect to said posts, a brace member positioned on each corner of said table member adjacent the othen end of the latter and having one end4 pivotally connected to theou-ter face of the adjacent side element of said table mer-liber for movement from a horizontal position in parallel relation with respect to said table member toa position extending between said table member and a post adjacent thereto, said ,side elements being provided with aligned notches for accommodating the adjacent portion of Said seat when the table member is in its upright depending position, and means on the other end` of each of said brace members for detachablyesecilifng the latter when in extended position tol the adjacent Dosts.
