To all fw wm t may concern Be it known that I, STANLEY BANAs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented new and useful improvements in Combined Chairs and ironing-Boards, of which the following is a specification.

rlfhis invention relates to a combined kitchen chair and ironing board.

An object of the invention is to construct a device in the form of a chair wherein the back may be adjusted to provide an ironing board.

A further object of the invention is to construct an article in the form of a chair having its back constructed of a plurality of hinged sections, one of said sections being pivotally connected with the side mem- 1 bers or stiles of the back whereby all of the members may be swung to a horizontal position to provide an ironing board, means being also provided for holding the sections in alinement and for supporting the sections A when spread to provide the board.

A still further object of the invention is to provide an article of furniture in the form of a chair having the rear stiles or legs thereof arranged to pivotally connect the back proper so that the said back may be swung therefrom to provide an ironing board, the seat of the chair being in the nature of a hinged element which closes a compartment and the said compartment being adapted to receive articles required in ironing, such for instance, as the irons, stand for the irons, wax, and the cover for the board.

VV'ith the above and other objects in view, the improvement resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and falling within the scope of the appended claim.

In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of an article constructed in accordance with the present invention, Fig. 2 is a central vertical longitudinal sectional view through the same, Fig. 3 is a horizontal sec tional view approximately on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2, Fig. t is a view illustrating the back swung to a horizontal position to provide an ironing board, Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view of a device illustrated in Fig. 4, Fig. 6 is a sectional view approximately on the line -m of Fig. 5, Fig. 7 is a detail sectional view on the line i/-y of Fig. 5,

and Fig. 8 is a similar sectional view approximately on the line z-.e of Fig. 5.

The chair l has the stiles providing' the rear legs thereof projected a suitable distance above the seat, in the ordinary man ner, and the seat 2 is hingedly connected to a strip which is secured to the rear stiles at the top of the chair proper, the seat normally closing a box-like compartment 3 and the said seat is preferably normally locked upon the compartment. The compartment may be provided with any desired number of partitions forming the same into suitable divisions for the reception of articles usually employed in ironing or for other kitchen or household purposes. The lower connecting strip for the rear legs is provided with an outwardly extending spring catch 4.

The Stiles of the rear legs, adjacent the top thereof, and upon their inner faces are provided with metal plates 5 each having an opening and one of the openings is arranged diametrically opposite the other, and these openings are adapted to serve as journals for the short shafts or trunnions (S provided upon the opposite edges of what I will term the outer board section 7 of the combined back and ironing board. rlhe section 7 has' its free end abutting with the straight end of the second section 8 of the combined ironing board and back, and the edges of the meeting sections 7 and 8 are formed with longitudinal depressions to receive metal strips 9 which have their meeting ends connected by carriage or rule joints 10. These joints 10 are so arranged as to permit of the section 8 being folded inwardly of the section 7, but to prevent the outward swinging of the said section 8 upon the section 7 so that when the sections are swung rearwardly and to a horizontal position with relation to the chair proper, the same will be sustained in alinement. To assist in such alinement, the end of the section 7 upon what I term its inner face is provided with a projecting bolt member 11 which centrally underlies the section 8 at the meeting edges of the said sections. This bolt ll is also adapted to be engaged by the spring catch when the section 8 is swung upon the section 7 and both of the sections are sustained as the back for the chair.

The section 8, at the free end thereof has hingedly secured thereto a leg or support 13, the said leg being arranged to normally assume an outward angle with relation to the board when supporting the device as an ironing board, and to accomplish this l arrange upon the underface of the section S suitable cleats 14 disposed to contact with the outer face of the/leg or support 13 as well as to contact with the edges thereof so that the outward swinging of the support will be thus limited and the movement of the support in a lateral or sidewise direction will be prevented. AThe support 13 when folded against the board section 8 is engaged by a spring clip 15 secured to the said board section 8, so that an outward swing ing of the leg or support from the said section 8 when the sections are folded to provide the back of the chair will be effectively prevented.

Each of the sections, upon the inner faces thereof, when the same are swung horizontally to provide the ironing board, are providediadjacent their edges with transversely arranged spring clips 16, and these clips are adapted to serve as retaining means for the fabric covering for the board.

When the sections are folded to provide the back for the chair, the section 8 will be contacted by both the leg connecting strip to which the spring catch 4 is secured and also by the strip to which the seat 2 is hing-A edly connected, and as the spring catch 4 engages with the bolt member 11 to effectively lock the sections 7 and 8 thereto, a

movement of either of the sections will be effectively prevented when the device is set up as a chair.

The device is simple, strong and thoroughly eliicient for the purpose designed, and from the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the simplicity of the device as Well as the advantages thereof will, it is thought, be perfectly apparent to those skilled in the art to which such invention appertains without further detailed description.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:

The combination with a chair, of a plurality of hingedly connected board members normally providing a back for the chair, one of the sections having trunnions engaging in bearing openings in the rear stiles of the chair, a bolt extending beyond the hinged end of one of the sections, a spring catch upon the chair adapted to engage with the bolt to hold the sections veri tically between the mentioned rear stiles of the chair, and a leg member hingedly secured to the other' section.
