IMPROVED SUAPFOLD.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CON-CERN Be it known that I, JOHN P. WRIGHT, of Canton, Leonora post oice, Fillmore county, Minnesota, have invented a new and improved Scaifold; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereofwhich will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the "same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in so constructing a scaffold that, by means of a screw and proper gears attached thereto, may be elevated or lowered by the side of a building, or at any other desired place, with facility and convenience. My invention is peculiarly adapted to the use of builders and painters, as it is portable and can be moved with convenience from place to place as may be desired. l
To enable others skilled in thc art tomake and use my invention, Iwill proceed to describe its construction and opera-tion. i

A represents a rectangular frame, from which extends, in a vertical direction, two posts B B, the tops of which are secured by a cross-beam, C, and the lower ends are more rigidly secured to the frame A by four inclined braces D D, which extend from the side of the said frame up to the said posts B B, and firmly secured thereto, by which a firm support is given to the posts F. EY is a screw-shaft, which runs upon a journalina suitable bearing, which is secured to a bridge-tree, F, that-has its support on the cross-pieces G G, only oneof which is shown in thel drawings, as these are no part of my invention, therefore are not shown. Near the lower end of the shaft E'is a bevel-wheel, H, that meshes into a corresponding bevel-wheel, I, which runs upon the vshaft J, which runs in proper bearings, the said shaft being `provided with a crank, K. L is also an upright shaft, to which is also attached a bevel-wheel, M, that corresponds with the wheel H. This shaft also runs in proper bearings at top and bottom, and near the top isa wheel, V, provided withpintles for the purpose of'turning the shaft. N N are nuts, through which the screw-shaft E works. These said nuts are provided with' a'lug that is fitted into and -works in .the groove V25 of theupright posts B B. O is the platform of the scaffold, which is made fast to arms U U, extending out from the nuts N. P P are postsnwhich are provided with grooves upon the inside, in whichworksa frame, towhich is also attached a platform that may be joined tothe main platform O when it is desired to lengthen. These platforms may be raised by means ofthe rope a'nd pulley Qand R. The operation simply consists. in placing the platform in any desired position at the side of a building, and
4then by turning the crank K, puts in motion the shaft E through the medium of thegear-wheels I and H, when,
by the action of the screw-thread upon the nuts N N, the platform is raised or lowered as desired. Whenl it is desired to elevate or lower the scaffold while upon the platform, by turning the horizontal `wheel V upon the shaft L, accomplishes this purpose through the medium lof the gear-wheellVI. It will be observed that when it is desired to use only a shorty scaffold, the portions attached to the posts P Bruay be removed by turning the buttons a a, and removing the pins t' t', when they can be removed readily. Thus it will be observed that by my invention the injuring and destroying-lumber in erecting s'caifolds, as wel] as injuring the walls of buildings in nailing thescaffolds thereto, are avoided.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is 1. -I claim Athe arrangement of the posts P P with the platform l,0, in combination with the screw-shaft E,
'2.Y I also claim the shaft L and bevel-wheel M, in combination with the shaft E and nuts N N, substantially and for the `purposes set forth.
