Also the pendent arm 21 provides a transverse shoulder 22, which snugly fits the upper edge of the back of the churn, and thereby firmly mounts the hinge member in position. Upon the under side of the cover there is provided a rectangular block 23, which is located centrally and is adapted to fit the interior of the churn-body, and thereby preventlateral movement of the cover during the operation of the churn. To lock the cover in the closed position thereof, there is provided a suitable spring-catch 24, comprising a flat strap of spring metal secured to the front edge of the cover and provided with an opening or perforation 25 for the reception of a pin 26, projecting laterally from the front side of the churn-body.

The operating means comprises a drivewheel 27, which is mounted upon an upright standard 28, carried by a yoke-shaped bracket 30, secured centrally to the top of the cover. Extending longitudinally and loosely through the standard 28 is a drive-shaft 31, carrying at its upper end a beveled pinion 32, which is in mesh with the drive-gear.

The dasher comprises a stem 33, having at its lower end the radial perforate blades 3% and provided at its upper end with a longitudinal socket 35, within which is received the lower end of the drive-shaft 31, and the latter is removably secured to the dasher-stem by means of a suitable pin or key 36.

It will be understood that the drive-shaft is capable of a longitudinal movement through the standard 28, so that by removing the pin or key 36 said shaft maybe removed without interfering with the drive-gear 27. Furthermore, the dasher-stem is of larger diameter than the drive-shaft and is adapted to engage with the lower side of the arched bracket 30, which spans the opening 37 in the cover, and also the upper end of the dasher-stem, whereby the bracket forms a stop to limit the upward movement of the dasher and the driveshaft and prevents the beveled pinion 32 from becoming disengaged from the drive-gear 27, as will be understood.

It will be noted that the dasher is nearly as large as the interior of the churn-body, and if the cover were connected by the usual hinge it would be impossible to open the cover,

as the dasher would engage the sides of the churn-body and prevent such opening. To obviate this difficulty, the present form of hinge has been provided. In opening the cover the spring-catch is disengaged, and the forward end of the cover is elevated sufficiently to raise the block 23 above the top edge of the churn-body. Then the cover is pulled forward until the pintles are alined with the respective longitudinal slots in the fixed hinge members, when the cover maybe elevated until the pintles engage the upper ends of the slots and pass'into the upper notches, after which the cover may be folded back upon the pintles as a center, the lower end of the dasher then being elevated sufficiently to clear the upper edge of the churnbody. In the closed position of the cover the hinge-pintles are located at the rear of the lower notches 20, and the upper walls of the latter engage the pintles, and thereby prevent accidental upward movement or displacement of the cover.

In order to facilitate the withdrawal of the buttermilk from the churn,as also the water when the churn is washed, an opening 40 is formed in one side of the churn-body adjacent the bottom and has a plug 41, although a spigot of any suitable form may be substituted for this plug.
