ROBERT W. HAMILTON, OF SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA.
TEMPORARY ACCOUNT-BOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 636,662, dated November '7, 1899. Application filed February 23,1899. Serial No- 706,581. (N 0 model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ROBERT W. HAMILTON, of San Diego, in the county of San Diego and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Temporary Account- Books, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in books or files for receiving loose account-slips or the like; and the object is to provide a simple and convenient book of this character in which monthly account-slips may be loosely placed in alphabetical order, so that they may be readily found at the end of a month or other period for the purpose of posting in the ledger.
I will 'describe a temporary account-book embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 shows a book embodying my invention in open position. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same folded, and Fig. 3 is a fragmental transverse section of the device.
The book comprises two stiff covers 1 2, connected together by a flexible accordion back 3. Connected to the back 3 by means of flexible strips 4 are main leaves 5, upon the outer edges of which primal index=tabs 6 are attached. The leaves 5 have a considerable space between them at their point of connection with the back 3, so as to provide accommodation for a large number of accountslips or other papers Without bulging the bookcovers.
Arranged between adjacent leaves 5 are two or more auxiliary leaves 7. The back edges of sets of leaves 7 are connected together by a flexible strip 8, and this strip is connected at convenient points along its center to the strip 4 by fastening devices 9. The strip 8 is nearly as wide as the strip 4:, so that the auxiliary leaves may spread apart as the space between them is filled. The auxiliary leaves at their outer edges are provided with syllabic indexings 10, and it will be noted that the leaves 7 are narrower than the main leaves 5, or, in other words, the outer edges of the main leaves extend beyond the outer edges of the auxiliary leaves. By this arrangement when it is desired to open the book a person may readily insert his fingers between the main leaves, thus making it unnecessary to take hold of and pull upon the tabs 6, as by such methods they might be torn 01f. The auxiliary leaves properly indexed serve to subdivide the alphabetical index, so that the account-slips of difierent persons whose surnames begin with the same letter can be kept separate as much as possible.
The method of using the book is obvious from its construction, and as the accountslips are to be filed in proper order immediately after making them it is clear that this book will be of great value to a merchant or bookkeeper.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A temporary account-book comprising covers, a flexible accordion back connecting said covers, main leaves spaced apart, a flexible strip connecting adjacent main leaves at the rear edge to each other and to the flexible back, auxiliary leaves arranged between adjacent main leaves, a strip of flexible material connecting the rear edges of the auxiliary leaves, and having a width substantially equal to that of the first-named strip, so that the auxiliary leaves may spread apart as the space between them is filled, the two strips being connected together at convenient points along the center, substantially as specified.
2. A temporary account-book, comprising main leaves, spaced apart and connected at their back edges by flexible expanding connections, auxiliary leaves narrower than the main leaves and arranged between adjacent main leaves, the said auxiliary leaves being connected at the back edges, with each other and with the flexible connections for the main leaves, and index-tabs on the main leaves, substantially as specified.
3. A temporary account-book, comprising covers, a flexible accordion back connecting said covers, main leaves spaced apart, wide flexible strips connecting adjacent main leaves to each other and to the back, auxiliary leaves arranged between adjacent main leaves and narrower than the main leaves, flexible strips connecting together the back edges of the auxiliary leaves, the said strips being nearly as wide as the strip connecting the main leaves, so that the auxiliary leaves may spread apart as the space between them is filled, and means for fastening the strips connecting the auxiliary leaves, to the strips connecting the main leaves at points along the center,-the said main leaves and auxiliary 10 leaves being suitably indexed, substantially as specified.
