COMBINED covert AND mn'nx FOR min BOOKS.
To all whom it may concern: v
Be it known that I, EDWARD J. MILLS, a
citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Covers and Indexes for Bound Books, of which the following is a specification. 'The present invention relates toa com: bined book-cover and index which may be nected thereto by a suitable connecting means and held in adjusted position between the leaves of a book; the object of the invention being the production of a protecting cover for bound books, and index sheets which may be inserted between the leaves of a book and. which are detachably connected at their opposite ends to the backbone of the cover, so that the index leaves may be removed from the book by detaching one end thereof from the cover and at no time will it be necessary to separate the leaves from the cover.
My invention is particularly adapted for use in connection with telephone books, for
' times, when opened is caused to be fiat, and
protecting the book and for securing ready reference alphabetically to the names of the subscribers, and to the classification of advertising matter. By the employment ofmy present invention, the-book is covered. at all the cover and index maybe quickly detached,
- from an old or discarded telephone book and quickly and easily applied to a new or re-issued book. I
With the above mentioned and other objects in View the invention consists in the novel construction-and combination of parts hereinafter described, illustrated inthe accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction within the scope of the claims may be .resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of'the invention.
To comprehend the invention reference.
' should be had'to the'iaccoinpanying' drawings, wherein- Figure 1 1s a view in plan of a telephone Specification-of Letters Patent.
book with my improved cover and index applied thereto, disclosing one leaf of the Patented Apr. 6, 1915.

cover in open position. Fig. 2 is an end view of a telephone book in open position with m cover and index applied thereto. Fig. 3 1s a plan view of the book in open position illustrating the index applied thereto.
Referring more particularly to the drawthe sheets of the index, each formed with anw index tab 2 on the forward edge thereof,
rings, wherein like characters of reference a and provided at its top and bottom edge adjacent its rear edge with a stub extension 3 formed with a perforation reinforced by an eyelet 3?. The' sheets 1' are preferably made of a size to cover the leaf of the book to which they are to be applied,
thereby "gaining considerable surface for the placing of advertising matter throughout the-book to which the index sheets are applied.
The rear edge of the sheet between the stub extensions 3 is cut away as at 4 to provide a free movement of the sheet relative to the back-bone 5 of the book into which the index sheets are located and said cut' away portions provide a clearance space 6 through-which the leaves of the book may be passed in case a mistake is made inpositioning the index sheet within the book.
As in Fig; 1 of the drawings, the index tab extensions 2 are stamped alphabetically,
the tab of each succeeding sheet from thesheet'having its tab stamped A, projecting a slight distance below the tab of a preced ing index sheet, so that the index letters are presented to viewin a convenient manner wlhgn theindex sheets are properly assemb e l r A protecting cover is positioned over the book to protect the. same, and saidv cover are joined by the cover back-bone 9, and
consists of the cover members 7 and 8 which extending longitudinally of the inner surfaceof the cover back-bone 9 and secured thereto in any suitable manner is a strengthening member 10 having a'curved exposed face which lies adjacent the outer surface of the'back-bone of the book when the cover is placed-thereover, and said strengthening member is adapted to elevate the back-bone ing easily opened are inserted through each.
of the screw-eyes 12 and the eyelets of each sheet 1 at the corresponding end of the sheet, and said rings retain the index sheets in the book and also retain the cover thereon. The strengthening member 10 prevents the slipping of the book from the cover when the moved from between the pages of the book,
cover is in the open position, as in Fig. l.'
In applying the cover and index to a telephone book, the book is positioned in the cover, as in the drawings, the index sheet bearing the tab extension of the letter A is inserted at the commencement of the sub-. scribers name falling under the letter A,
The index sheet bearing the tab extension of the letter Bis inserted at the commencement of the subscribers name fallingunder the letter B. llhis manner of inserting the index sheets is continued until all have been inserted alphabetically within. the book, the rings 14; are then slipped through the eyelets 3 of the sheets and through the screweyes 12, and when closed, the leaves are secured on the book and the book cover is retained in position relative to the book.
When it is desired to remove the index sheets from within the book and the cover from around the book, for the employment of the same in connection with a newly issued telephone directory, it is only necessary to disconnect one of the rings 14 from the leaves, and this permits the leaves to be pivoted on the other ring and quickly reand also permits the book to .be removed from the cover.
I have provided a cover and index which may be used in connection with any book where an index is needed and one which is capable of attachment to or removal from a book without altering the book or injuring the same. 4 o
, Having thus described my invention what is claimed as new and is desired to be protectedby Letters Patent is 1; A device of the class described, the
'same comprising a plurality of index sheets for insertion between the leaves of a book, and each provided with a projecting tab containing a letter indicative of the alphabetical posit-ion of the sheet relative to the leaves of the book,-a'-perforated extension projected from the upper and bottom edges of each' sheet adjacent the rear edge thereof, and to insane;
extend a slight distance beyond said edges of the book, a book cover protector positioned around the binding of the book, and a split ring hingedly connected to said cover protector and for passing through the perforated extension of each index sheet for securing the index sheets together and to said cover protector.
2; A device of the class described, the same comprising a plurality of indexvsheets for insertion between the leaves of a book, and each provided with a projecting tab containing a letter indicative of the alphabetical position of thesheet relative to the leaves of a book, a book cover protector positioned around the binding ofthe book, an inwardly projecting strengthening member carried on the inner surface of the back-bone of the cover protector, and means for hing edly and detachably connecting said index sheets to said strengthening member.
- 3. A device of the class described, the same comprising a plurality of index sheets for insertion between the leaves of a book and each provided with aprojecting tab inwardly projecting strengthening member I carried on the innerfsurface of the back-bone of the cover protector and extending longitudinally thereof, projections extended from the exposed surface of said strengthen.-
ing member adjacent its ends for limiting the movement of the book longitudinally thereof, and means for hingedly and detachably connecting the extension of each'sheet with said strengthening member;
4. A device of the. class described, the same comprising a plurality of index sheets for insertion between. the leaves of a book and each provided with a projecting tab containing a letter indicative of the alphabetical position of the sheet relative to the leaves of'a book, a perforated extension projected from the upper end lower edges of each sheet adjacent the rear edge thereof and to extend a slight distance beyond said edges of thebook, a book cover protector positioned around'the binding of the book, an inwardly projecting strengthening member carried on the inner surface of the backlid bone of the cover protector and'extending longitudinally'thereof, end-plates carriedby the-ends of said strengthening member for contacting with the back-bone otthe book strengthening member, and sp1itrings name to this specification in the presence of adapted for insertion through the perfotwo subscribing witnesses.
rated extensions on said sheets and said screw-eyes for hingedly and .detacha'ply con- 5 necting said sheets to said strengthening member.
In testimony whereof I have signed my EDWARD J a MILLS.
