SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 635,578, dated October 24, 18 99.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. NIXON, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Burlington, State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Head and Back Rests for Invalids and Others, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.

My invention consists of a head and back rest for an invalid or other person, formed of a frame which may be placed or adjusted at different degrees of inclination and is provided with means for controlling the same and which may be folded when service of the same is not required and secured against unfolding or opening, as will be hereinafter described.

Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a rest inoperative condition embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a perspective View of the same in folded or inoperative condition. Fig. 3 represents an elevation of a detached portion.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.

Referring to the drawings, A designates a base, preferably of the form of an open frame, and B designates a longitudinally-extending bar connected with the relative sides of said frame.

O designates a frame which is adapted to support a cushion or pillow or to be upholstered, the same being mounted on one end on ears D on the base A as its axis, whereby it may be raised or lowered thereon and; placed in inclined positions or folded down,

E designates a prop formed of a pair of legs having a journal F at the place of junction thereof and diverging from said journal toward the sides of the frame C, where its ends are formed with journals G, which are mounted in bearings H on said sides.

The journal F is mounted in the ear or bearing J on the sleeve K, the latter being freely fitted on the bar B, whereby it may slide to and fro on said bar. is the screw L, which is adapted to tighten against the bar B and prevent motion of said sleeve when the frame C is adjusted in oper- On said sleeve ative position. In order to afford the sleeve K the fullest motion for causing the frame to clear the screw when said frame lowers and conveniently operating said screw when the frame is folded, the side of the frame 0 is formed with the offset N, into which said sleeve enters when said frame is in lowermost position, it

being noticed that the bar B is lengthened, so as to extend to the center of said offset, to which it is secured, the head of the screw thus being accessible outside of the frame 0.

The operation is as follows: The rest is placed on a bed or mattress, the screw L being loosened, and the frame B is turned upwardly on its axis, whereby it assumes an inclined position, it being noticed that the prop E and sleeve K follow said frame. When the latter assumes the desired angle, the screwL is tightened, and thus the frame retains its port for'the head and back of the person resting thereon.

When service of the rest is not required, the screw L is loosened and the frame folded down on the base. The screw is then rotated, so that its head projects over or overhangs the adjacent portion of the frame 0 and prevents rattling and unfolding or opening of the latter.

The parts in the main are preferably formed of metal, to which material, however, I do not limit myself.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A frame, a base on which one end of said frame is pivotally mounted, a baron said base, a sliding sleeve on said bar freely embracing the same, an car on said sleeve, a prop pivotally connected with said frame and ear, and a screw on said sleeve for locking the same 011 said bar, said sleeve being formed of separate parts with means for connecting the same, one part carrying said ear and screw.

2. Aframe, a base on which one end of said frame-is pivotally mounted, a bar on said base, a sliding sleeve on said bar, a prop pivotally connected with said frame and sleeve, and a screw on said sleeve adapted to have its point tighten against said bar, when the frame is in inclined operative position, and to have its head engage said frame when the latter is folded on said base.

In a headrest of the character stated, a

base having a cross-bar thereon, an offset on the side of said base to which one end of said bar is secured, a tilting frame mounted on said base, a slide on said cross-bar, a prop mounted on said slide and frame, and a screw on said slide, said screw being adapted to retain the frame both in inclined operative and folded inoperative positions.

4. A frame, a base on which said frame may be placed in inclined position, a prop for supporting-said frame when so placed, a sliding sleeve on said base carrying said prop, a screw on said sleeve for locking the frame in either operative or folded position, and an oifset on said base to receive said sleeve when the frame is folded.
