,DOoR CHECK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 634,955, dated October 17, 1899.
Application filed July 11, 1899. Serial No. 723,463. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL THEODORE PAIN- TER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chattanooga, in the county of Hamilton and State of Tennessee, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Door- Ohecks, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to a device for holding doors, windows, and other closure means in a vertical open position, whereby proper ventilation may be afforded, the object of the invention being to furnish a simple andefficientcontrivance adapted to be secured to the frame of the door or window to act upon and in connection therewith; and the invention consequently consists in the construction, arrangementgand combination of parts, substantially as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating myinvention, Figure 1 is a front elevationof a portion of a door-frame and of a door provided with my present improved door-fastening means. Fig. 2 is a front viewof the metallic casting for holding the torsionally-twisted ends of the wire of which the device consists. Fig. 3 is a rear view of the same. Fig. 4c is a detail View of the projection or clip on the edge of the door for engaging the notches or convolutions of the wire. Fig. 5 is a top plan view.
Like numerals of reference denote like parts in all figures.
1 represents a portion of a door-frame, and 2 a portion of a door which is hinged in said frame.
It will be understood that the primary aim and purpose of my present invention is to provide a device for holding the door ajar and in any desired position. This device consists of a semicircular wire 3, which is formed with a plurality of notches, corrugations, or convolutions 4 4 4, said convolutions at being in 5 a vertical plane, while the semicircular wire 3 is situated in a horizontal plane, and it will be noted that the convolutions 4 provide.
spaces of sufficient size to permit the entrance through them of the clip 14, carried by the upper edge of the door. In order to secure the semicircular wire 3 rigidly to the doorcasing 1., it is found in actual practice that the space ordinarily afforded on a casing for use for this purpose is so small that the attachment must be made at a single point, and consequently it is necessary to provide some simple eflicient device that will hold the ends of the semicircular wire and secure the same tightly to the casing 1. In order to properly provide for this, I employ the casting represented in front view in. Fig. 2and designated by the reference-numeral 8, the same having horizontal oppositely extending arms 9 9, While at the center of plate 8 is an integrallycast rectangular surface 16, having cornerorifices 13. The rear face of the casting 8 is provided with grooves 10 10, adapted to receive the end portions 5 5 of the wire 3, the tips 6 6 of said end portions 5 5 being bent at right angles to the remainder of the end portions and lying in the correspondinglybent portions of the grooves 10 10, all as clearly representedin Fig. 3. It will be noted that in order to thus situate the bent ends 5 5 of the wire 3 in the aforesaid grooves 10 it will be necessary to impart a torsional twist to the wire 3, and this twist will have its effect in keeping the said wire 3 in a horizontal plane and in returning it to said plane whenever it may be momentarily deflected therefrom through the agency of the edge of the door, the clip on-said edge, or any other device which may engage the convolutions 4. Corresponding in shape to the rectangular portion 16 of the device 8 is a square or rectangular plate 11, having corner perforations 12, that coincide with the perforations 13 in the part 16. When the device is practically applied to the door casing, the plate 11 is first fixed in position, and then the casting 8, containing the ends of the wire, as shown, is placed over it, and screws or other attaching devices 17 are passed through the perforations 12 and 13 and driven tightly into the doorcasing, thereby holding the casting 8 rigidly in place.
The projection 1-1- on the upper edge of the door 2 is preferably provided with a rounded tip 15, adapted to engage the convolutions 4: when the door is swung upon its hinges. I
do not Wish to be restricted, however, to the particular projection or clip 14-, but reserve the liberty of employing any similar clip for the same purpose.
Numerous changes in the exact construction and application of the within mechanism may be made Without departing from my invention, and I desire to have it expressly understood that I am not confined to the exact form of construction and arrangement shown and described; but I reserve the right to make such alterations therein as may be fairly inferred from the terms of the description and claims.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a door-holder, the combination with a semicircular wire bent to form vertical corrugations or convolutions, of a holder having suitable grooves cut therein, which grooves are adapted to receive the bent ends of the semicircular wire in such a manner as that the wire may act as a torsi0n-spring.
2. In a door-holder, the combination with a semicircular Wire bent to form vertical corrugations or convolutions and provided at each end with bent portions, of a holder adapted to be secured to the door-casing, said holder consisting of a grooved casting adapted to receive the bent ends of the wire in such a manner as that the Wire may act as a tersion-spring, and means for securingthe holder to the casing, and a clip on the edge of the door for engaging the corrugations of the wire.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
CARL THEODORE PAINTER.
