Description

Oct. 3, 1939. G. F. MCDONALD 2,174,800
GEORGE F. M5 DONALD Bydgr HIS ATTORNEYS.
Patented Oct. 3,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
This invention relates to a combination brace and hanger for screen frames, and the like.
An object of the invention is to provide a device which is simple in construction, economical to manufacture, and which will serve as a T or other brace for a window screen frame, and which will also serve as a hanger whether a full length or half length screen is used.
Other and specific objects will be apparent from the following detail description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
Fig. 1 is an elevation showing the device of this invention applied to a frame for a full length window screen;
Fig. 2 is an elevation showing the application of the device to a half length screen;
Fig. 3. is a sectional View showing an end elevation of the device in use as a hanger; and
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the device.
A device embodying this invention is shown in Fig. 4 and is preferably a metal stamping. Eighteen gauge sheet steel has been found sufficiently flexible and satisfactory for this purpose. The device is in the form of a T having a leg I and arms 2. Holes 3, 4 and 5, as best shown in Fig. 4., are punched in the stamping and accommodate screws, nails or pins, and an elongated notch 6 is formed in the top of the T, between the arms 2, for the special purpose as shown in Fig. 2, and which will be described later in detail.
In the installation shown in Fig. 1, six of the devices are shown in use on a screen for three diiferent purposes. The devices 1 at the upper 5 corners serve not only as L braces for the frame but one leg of each T serves as a hanger. To form the upper arm 2 as a hanger, it is bent outwardly in arcuate shape, as best indicated at 8, Fig. 3, and a pin 9 is driven through the 40 hole 3 in that arm; the pin 9 being inserted obliquely of the window frame in which the screen is mounted. With this arrangement the screen will be held in place readily while it may be swung outwardly from the bottom, or
45 removed as desired. In the installation of the devices 1, nails or screws are passed through the holes 4 and 5 and the hole 3 in the lower arm 2 and are secured in the rail l0 and stiles l I.
In Fig. 1, a pair of devices I2 are used in the 50 way that ordinary T braces are employed, nails or screws passing through the hole 5 into a middle rail [3 and screws or nails pass through the holes 3 and 4 into a stile II.
The lower pair of devices M, as shown in Fig. 1, are employed to provide an L brace, while an outwardly extending arm of the T serves as 5 a stop for abutment against the outer surface of the window frame.
In the embodiment shown in Fig. 2 devices [5 are used in a half length screen. Each device forms an L brace with an outwardly extending 1o arm 2 serving as a hanger with a hole 3, through which a pin 9 may pass into the window frame in the same manner as shown in Fig. .3. Because of the notch 6, the two arms of the T are separated, thus permitting the upper edge of an arm to be bent over as shown at I6, in the same manner as the portion 8 is shown in Fig. 3 and described above.
It will be obvious that a device has been provided which is simple in construction and eco- 20 nomical to manufacture, and which will serve not only as a hardware brace for a frame, but which will also serve as a hanger for a screen frame whether that frame be full length or half length. The device may be manufactured 25 readily by a single stamping operation from inexpensive material. A gauge of metal may be used which permits an unskilled workman with common tools to bend it to serve the various functions for which it is intended.
In the drawing the device is shown applied to screens in such a manner as to permit their swinging in a vertical direction. It will be obvious, however, that they may be installed so that the screen may be swung in a horizontal plane.
I claim:
1. A combination brace and hanger for screen frames comprising a flexible sheet metal T with holes through the leg and arms of the T, and an elongated notch at the top between the extremities of the arms for the purpose described.
2. A combination brace and hanger for screen frames comprising a flexible sheet metal T with holes through the leg and arms of the T, and an elongated notch at the top between the extremities of the arms for the purpose described, the edge of one of the arms between the notch and the end of said arm being bent out arcuately for the purpose described.
