TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Be it known that I, JOHN A. WIEDERSHEIM, of the city and county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a useful improvement in Barbers Brushes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the nature thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it app ertains to construct and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which-- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention.

Figure 2 is a transverse vertical section of the same taken through the middle of its length.

It is Well known to all persons frequenting barber shops that the barbers, after applying the lather to the face, rub the face with their fingers until the skin becomes smooth, allowing the razor to glide readily over the face. During the various processes of shaving, hair cutting and dyeing, rubbing of the head, and oiling and greasing of the same, the barbers seldom, if ever, Wash their hands, so that when the face is rubbed, it receives some, if not all, of the accumulations on the barbers hands;

The object of my inventionis to obviate this unpleasantness and remedy the evil. I have found that an India-rubber fringe will take hold of the face the same as the. fingers of the human hand, and which is sufiicicnt-ly pliable'at the same time not to injure the skin. If this fringe is secured to a flexible back, every portion of the face over which my brush is passed will be reached and be subjected to the rubbing process.

In the drawings, A represents my brush, consisting of a flexible back, B. The rubbing portion consists of a series of elastic sllreds, C, o f India rubber, close to each other, as seen in the drawings, and made with or united to the back B. I attaclr a strap, Ditb the back, although a wooden one may be employed, or the back elongated into a handle for the purpose of operating the brush. The shape of the back is of no importance, and I will be enabled to regulate this after more practical use.

The operation is simply rubbi-ngthe" lathered' face in lieu of fingers, and my brush will perform its work in a more satisfactory manner. It can easily be washed and always kept clean, and can be made of such a price so that every customer or patron of barbers can have one for his own use.

I am aware that brushes with flexible backs have been constructed, and others with strips and rings, yet these out and scrape the face and are utterly worthless for the purpose herein intended.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

As an article of manufacture the barbers brush, the same consisting of the flexible back, and a rubbing portion of elastic fringe O, substantially as herein represented and described.
