COMBINED ADVERTISING-CABINET AND BOOKCAS E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 632,143, dated August 29, 1899.
Application filed December 28, 1898. Serial No.700,5ll-. (No model.)
' [O cabinet and bookcase designed for use in stores, hotels, and other public places and arranged to effectively display a large number of advertisements and to contain choice books of reference, 850.
4 The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the views.
Figure l is a perspective view of the improvement, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same with parts in a different position.
The improved article of furniture comprises a bookcase A, mounted on casters B and provided with suitable shelves or receptacles D for containing books of reference and the like. The lower portion of the bookcase is provided at its front with an advertising-space E for containing suitable advertisements, and in said bookcase is also arranged to slide horizontally a support F for conveniently sustaining books or the like. The support F is provided with the usual stop for preventing the support from being drawn out too far.
On the sides of the bookcase A, at the front edges thereof, are arranged hinges Gfor wings H H, which are preferably paneled for receiving suitable plates containing advertisements, said wings being provided with suitable casters B for readily supporting the wings and relieving the hinges of undue strain.
On the top of the bookcase A is arranged a cap I, provided at its middle with a receptacle 1 for a book or the like and having advertising-spaces I at the sides of the receptacle I. The cap I is further provided with lateral extensions J J, having their fronts J J connected by hinges K to the sides of the front of the cap I, so that said fronts J and J may be swung forward into the same angular position as the wings H H. (See the right-hand 5 5 portion of Fig. 2.) Usually, however, the wings H H are swung into an obtuse angular position relatively to the sides of the bookcase, the extensions J J of the cap overhanging the wings. It is understood that the po- 6o sition of the wings H H is determined accordingto the space the article of furniture is to occupy-that is, whether it is to be set in a corner or along the wall or other place of regular or irregular shape.
The article of furniture described is very simple and durable in construction, forms a convenient means for containing books of reference, and at the same time displays a large number of advertisementsin a very convenient and attractive manner.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent I p 1. An article of furniture comprising a bookcase provided with suitable receptacles for books of reference and the like, and having an advertising-space at its front, wings at the sides of the bookcase arranged for displaying advertisements, said wings having hinged connections with the sides of the bookcase at the forward edge thereof, and adapted to be swung forward or rearward into angular positions relatively to the bookcase,
and a cap for the top of the bookcase provided with advertising-spaces, substantially as shown and described.
2. An article of furniture comprising a bookcase, and a cap for the top of said bookcase having angular side extensions, the front of said extensions being hinged to the cap and adapted to be swung into angular positions, the said cap and the angular side extensions being provided with advertisingspaces, substantially as shown and described. 5
3. An article of furniture comprising a bookcase, and a cap for said bookcase provided at its middle with a receptacle for a book or the like, and having advertisingspaces at the sides of the receptacle, the said cap being further provided with lateral extensions haviug their fronts connected by hinges to the sides of the front of the cap, whereby said extensions may be swung into angular positions, substantially as described.
4. An article of furniture comprising a bookcase provided with suitable receptacles for books of reference and the like, the lower portion of the bookcase being provided at the front with an advertising-space, and wings hinged to the sides of the bookcase at the front edge thereof and adapted to be swung into angular positions relatively to the bookcase, the said Wings having advertisingspaces, substantially as shown and described.
5. An article of furniture" comprising a bookcase mounted on casters and provided with suitable receptacles for books of reference and the like, the lower portion of the for displaying advertisements, substantially 25 as shown and described.
