Description

M. GARDNER ET AL DIISPLAY SHELVES Filed Feb. 4, 1926 MAURICE GARDNER AND RALPH YOUTZ, Oil? CUYAHOGA FALLS, OHIO;
DISPLAY SHELVES.
Application filed February at, 1926. Serial No. 85,990
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in display shelves and more particularly to footwear display shelves removably mounted. in front of sections of or dinary footwear store shelving, prominently displaying and ofiering convenient inspection of the footwear for sale while occupying a minimum of store space.
Another object is to provide means for pivotallv mounting the display shelf at an angle advantageous for the display of footwear in front of a store shelf allowing the footwear boxes to be placed on the shelf behind and providing easy access thereto for inserting or removing the boxes without removing or disturbing the displayed footwear.
A further object is to provide means for maintaining the display shelf in raised position while inserting or removing the boxes from the shelf in the'rear. Qther objects and features of the invention will be hereinafter described and pointed out.
1 shows a section of footwear store shelving with a row of footwear display shelves installed.
Fig. 2 is a section on line 22 of Fig. 1 showing the display shelf in full lines and the store shelves and footwear in dot and dash lines.
Fig. 3 is a section showing the shelf raised.
' l is a plan view of a shelf unit.
Fig. 5 is a detail view of the shelf maintaining means;
Referring to the drawings 5 indicates the shelves of ordinary footwear store shelving supported by vertical strips 6 for holding footwear boxes 7. The display shelf units 10 are inserted preferably in a row on intermediate store shelves 5 about waist high and each unit 10 comprises an inclined display shelf or front hoard 11 hinged at the top as at 12 on the inclined front edge 13 of spaced side supports 14: braced at the rear by cross strips 15 and 16 and at the bottom by cross strip 17 butting against the front edge of shelf 5. The sides 18 of shelves 11 project slightly beyond the sides of supports 1%- lying adjacent to the side edges of adjoining display shelves providing a continuous display surface. A longitudinally extending strip 17 is secured to the outer in clined face of shelf 11. The side supports shelves,
14 lie adjacent to vertical store shelf supports 6. Upon raising the display shelf 11 access is provided to the store shelf space behind between side supports 14 for inserting or removing footwear boxes 7'.
Means for maintaining the display shelf in raised position is provided by a pivoted spring supported arm 18 connected to link 19 pivoted on bracket 20 mounted on the underside of the display shelf 11. The'lever 18 projects through a slot of a flanged cup shaped housing 21 carrying a concentric stud 22 pivoting lever 18,' the opposite arm 23 connecting to the end of a coil spring '24: having its other end connected to a frame 25 pivoted on stud 22. Frame 25 has a radial clamping slot 26 and an adjusting arm .27 protruding through another slot in housmg 21. A clamping member 28 pivoted on stud 22 carries a screw 29 extending, through radial slot 26 to the outer side of housing 21 to a screw head. 7
To adjust the compression of spring 24 on lever 18, screw 29 is loosened and the spring carrying frame 25 is shifted by means of arm 2? increasing or decreasing the compression of spring 24: against lever 18, balancing the weight of shelf 11 alone or together with the displayed footwear. The screw 29 is then drawn up, clamping member 28 on frame 25.
The display device is very attractivein appearance, inexpensive to construct and provides a highly edective display for increasing the sale of footwear or other merchandise.
While we have shown one embodiment of our invention for the purpose of illustration, it is obvious that various changes in the parts and details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
life claim p p 1. The combination with a set of store of a display means comprising a row of frames fitting in oneof the shelf spaces, said frames having sides with inclined front edges projecting forwardly beyond the front of the shelves, and display front hoards hinged at their upper edges to said sides and normally resting upon said edges, and adapted to be swung up to permit access into the space between the store shelves.
2. combination with upper and-lower llfltl lea store shelves, of a dislgl'ay means comprising a frame fitting in t e space between said shelves and retained in position thereby, said frame having sides with inclined front ends 5 projecting forwardly beyond the front edge of the shelves, and a front board hinged to said sides and normally resting on said inciined ends and adapted to be swung up to permit articles to be placed in or withdrawn from said space. 10
In testimony whereof, We do aflix our signatures.
MAURICE GARDNER. RALPH YOUTZ.
