Be it known that 1, WALTER M. THURBER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Valley City, in the county of Barnes and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Tools for Horseshoers Use; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the let-ters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in blacksmiths tools, and especially to a combination implement of this nature whereby the hoof may be trimmed and the shoe of a horse set without the necessity of changing tools, as I embody in my improved device a scraper, gouge, hammer, rasp, 86c.

Another part of the present invention resides in the provision of means whereby the angle at which it is desired to have the scraper disposed may be easily and quickly adjusted.

To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain the same consists, further, in the novel construction, combination, and adaptation of the parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claim.

My invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this application, and in which drawings similar letters of reference indicate like parts throughout both views, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my improved combination-tool with the scraper shown as in a closed relation. Fig. 2 is a view showing the scraper adjusted at an angle and in readiness for operation.

Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the handle of the tool, which is preferably flat on one side and rounding on the opposite face and having a nail-extractor or claw B at one end. Secured to the flattened face of the handle is a rasp D, which may be held to the handle in any suitable manner. This rasp when adj usted to the handle has its outer face flush with the enlarged portion 0 of the handle, as shown. The projecting portion E on one edge of the handle is designed to serve the purpose of a hammer, and forwardly-extending from the said hammer is an arm G, and pivoted on the pin G, carried by said arm, is the member H, which has one end brought to a cutting edge, as at R, forming a scraper, and in order to hold this scraper at any desired angle best adapted for the use for which it is intended I provide the metallic strip K, secured atv one end to the edge of the handle opposite the hammer, and to the outer end of this strip one end of the pin G is pivoted. On one side of the member H isa pin J, which is designed to engage in one of the apertures K in the strip K to hold the scraper at the angle desired. In adjusting the scraper the strip K may be sprung out, allowing the scraper to turn on its pivot until it assumes the position desired. Then the strip is sprung over the lug J to hold the scraper in a fixed position.

The opposite end of the scraper from that having the cutting edge described is the re cessed or cut-away portion with a longitudinal cutting edge g, which is utilized for paring the hoof. The extreme end of said longitudinal edge is bent into a slight hook shape, as noted at R. It will be observed that the outer cutting edge g, which is longitudinally disposed, may be held either at an angle to the handle or in alinement with it, as desired.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A combination-tool, comprising the hau dle, a double-ended cutting member pivoted thereto, a spring-strip secured at one end to saidmember, its upper end apertured and held yieldingly over the end of the pivotal pin on which said member is mounted,and the pin J on said member and designed to en gage in apertures K in the spring-strip, com bined as set forth.
