UNrrnD STATES PATENT OFFICEI JERRY FRANCIS ONEIL, OF LEIVISTON, MAINE.
COMBINATION-RULE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 630,100, dated August 1, 1899.
Application filed April 24, 1897. $erial1lo. 633,588. (No model.)
To rtZZ whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, JERRY FRANCIS ONEIL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lewiston, in the county of Androscoggin and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Rules; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in combination-rules; and the object of the same is to provide an improved pocket-rule combined with a glass cutter and breaker.
The invention consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the rule in a folded position. Fig. 2 is a View with the ends of the rule slightly separated. Fig. 3 is a side view showing the rule slightly unfolded.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 indicates a folding pocket-rule of ordinary construction having the plates forming the knuckle-joint by means of which its two members 2 and 3 are hinged together formed with the slot 4. This slot is adapted to receive the glass when it is desired to separate the same after it has been scored by the cutter.
Secured to the extremity of the member 2 of the rule is a plate 5, in which is pivoted the glass-cutting wheel 6, said plate depending slightly below the edge of the rule. The
member 3 of the rule has its lower edge inclined and provided with a plate 7, in which is pivoted the glass cutting wheel 8. By means of this construction it will be seen that the glass may be quickly and readily cut by the cutters in the ends of the rule and the cut portion separated from the main por= tion by the slotted plates of the knucklejoint. By separating the members slightly, as illustrated in Fig. 3, the edge formed by the slot in the central plate of the knucklejoint may be caused to move across the slot of the outer plate and secure a firm hold upon the glass to be separated.
From the above description it will be seen that I have produped a combination pocketrule and glass-cutter, together with a device for separating the glass which has been cut.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of a pocket-rule, a glasscutter carried thereby, the plates forming the knuckle joint being slotted to receive the glass for separating the same, the edge of the slot of the inner plate being adapted to be moved across the slot of the outer plates of the joint for gripping the glass that has been separated, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. v
JERRY FRANCIS ONEIL.
