Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. MAHoNY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mailing, rbc., Attachments for Books, duc.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to certain improvements in shipping or mailing contrivances or attachments for certain mattei', such as books and the like..

It has for its object, among other things, to protect or guard the edges or those portions of said matter most liable to be marred or injured in its transit through the mails and to otherwise promote convenience, facility, and utility.

It consists, primarily, of means or medium for inclosing or guarding the edges, including the corners, of the article or matter designed to be sent through the mail, compris- J ing, preferably, card or straw board scored or creased and having outlined or predetermined folds which will enable it to be readily adapted to the purpose, as aforesaid, substantially as hereinafter more fully disclosed, and specifically pointed out in the claims.

It will be understood that latitude is allowed herein as to details, as they may be changed or varied, according to circumstances, without departing from the spirit of my invention, and the same yet remain intact and be protected.

In the accompanying' drawings, showing the preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure l is a view showing its eXempliiication or application for use. Fig. 2 is a view of a corner piece or section. Fig. 3 is a View of another section or piece adapted to inclose two corners and span or inclose the intermediate edge of the article. Fig. 4 is a view showing a third section or piece for compassing all the corners and spanning or inclosing all the intermediate edges of the article. Fig. 5 is an inside plan view of a modilication disciosing a corner piece or guard comprising two separate sections with the point of at tachment between them restricted to their normally-lateral lapping portions. Fig. 6 is a sectional view on the line 0c c of Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a sectional view on line fy y, Fig. 5. Fig. 8 is an inside plan view of another modification, showing the guard in its initial or blank form in a substantially right-angled single piece. Figs. 9 and 10 are perspective views of stillanother modification in its general outline substantially the same as the embodiment of the preferred form or as shown in Fig. l, the same, however, being in two separate sections suitably connected together.

In carrying out my invention I take, say, a piece of card or strawboard l or other suitable material or medium and cut it to form, when bent or applied to the article upon which it is to be used, an angular or corner piece to inclose the corner edge of said article. After thus cutting it into general shape or outline it is creased or scored transversely, as at 2, to conform prospectively to said angle of the article or book and further scored or creased longitudinally or at right angles to the aforesaid creasing or scoring, as at 3, to cause it to lap the sides of said article or book contiguous to said corner edge. The latter scoring or creasing may consist in producing in the material a series of parallel closely-arranged scores or creases along one edge of the lateral lapping portion and a single crease or score along the opposite lateral lapping portion to enable it to readily ieX or fold along said creases or scores and conform to the thickness of the article or book. This avoids requiring the production of said creases on predetermined lines in accordance with the width of the particular book or article to be mailed, shipped, or expressed.

The card orstraw board has a closely-adhering lining of light paper 4 to reinforce or actually hinge together the sections,as it were, into which the card or straw board may be or is formed in scoring or creasing the same.

The angular or corner piece has its lateral or inturned portions slitted or cut, as at 5, the slit or cut extending from the longitudinal crease or creases to cause the sections thus formed to stand at right angles and lap each other. As disclosed in Fig. 3, it may be constructed to inclose two corners of the article and the intermediate longitudinal edge therebetween, the same being duplicated to compass the remaining corners or angles and edges, or, as shown in Fig. 4C, it may be made in a single piece to inclose all the corners and intermediate edges of the article or book. It is further noted that, if desired, the angle or corner guard may have both of its side lapping portions connected together or arranged as when put upon the book-corner at the outset, or only the lateral portions at one side may be thus connected, While the corresponding portions thereof may be not so connected.

As shown in the modification embraced in Fig. 5, I may substitute in lieu of above a corner piece or guard 6 made in two sections 6a 6a, initially arranged substantially in the same plane-t1 e., one lying flat with relation to and suitably fixed or connected to the other and arranged with their lengths at right angles to each other. These sections are also suitably creased or scored on longitudinal lines and have their point of attachment restricted to the lateral lapping portions thereof, respectively, whereby when they are folded or applied for use one will stand at right angles to the other and their lateral portions caused to lap each other in their final shape.

As disclosed in the modification embodied in Fig. 8, I may use in lieu of any of the foregoing a corner piece or guard 7 made in a single piece, in its general outline right angular, with a section removed therefrom, as at 7, at the otherwise outer corner-angle on the lines of the inner creases or scores of the prospective corner and edge, inclosing portions thereof, respectively,

In the modication as disclosed by Figs. 9 and l() is shown a modification, though embracing the preferred embodiment of the invention, as shown, for instance, in Fig. 1; but in this modified form it is made in two sepa rate sections suitably connected together.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. As a new article of manufacture, a mailing or shipping attachment or contrivance, comprising a corner-piece having creases or scores and additional scores or creases paralleling the aforesaid creases or scores, and one portion adapted to be disposed at right angles to the other portion, substantially as described.

2. As a new article of manufacture, a mailing or shipping contrivance or attachment for certain matter comprising corner-pieces, and a uniting portion, creased or scored on lines at right angles to each other, and having additional closely-arranged creases or scores as set forth, substantially as described.

3. As a new article of manufacture, a mailing or shipping contrivance or attachment comprising angular or corner pieces folded on transverse and longitudinal lines, with lateral portions lapping the sides of the article, and connecting portions between said cornerpieces` having additional closely-arranged scores or creases, substantially as specified.

4. As a new article of manufacture, the mailing or shipping contrivance or attachment, comprising anangular or corner piece provided with a transverse crease or score and with a series of scores or creases at right angles to the aforesaid score or crease, also with transverse slits or cuts in its lateral lapping portions, intersecting or extending from said series of creases or scores, substantially as set forth.

5. As a new article of manufacture, the mailing or shipping contrivance or attachment comprising a corner piece or guard, with its relatively right-angled sections scored or creased on longitudinal lines and their lateral portions adapted to be connected together, substantially as set forth.

6. As a new article of manufacture, a mailing or shipping contrivance or attachment comprising a corner-guard, in a single piece, with one portion or section arranged at right angles to the other portion or section and creased or scored on right-angled lines, substantially as set forth.
