Description

@ititrh gimme item @ffi JOHN A. LAK -yon NEW HAVEN-CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR To BLA'i.
BROTHERS, or siinn'iriinon. Liam Patent No. 62,925, dateii March 19,1367.
INK WELL covsa.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JOHN A; BLAKE, of New Haven, in the county New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new improvement in Ink-Well Covers; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-- Figure 1 a top view.
Figure 2, a side view,
Figure 3, a section. on line xx.
Figure 4, the cover detached to' show its construction.
Figure 5, a top view of the common ink-well cover and in 'Figurefi, a section of the same on line Y Y. W
Heretofore the hinge of the cover has been formed by the insertion of a pintle, as in common butt hinges. This formation of the hinge occasions a large part of the cost, of manufacture. To simplify the construction of the hinge, thereby reducing the cost of manufacture, is the object of my invention,'which consists in forming the pintle upon the cover itself, and a hooked shank, which, placed over the pintle so formed, securely holds the cover and Forms the hinge; v
'Io enahle others to construct and use my improvement, I will proceed to describe the same as illustrated in the accompanying drawings. First, I will describe the cover as heretofore constructed, and as shown in figs. 5 and (i. v
' 4 .A is the cover, formed with two cars, a; B the shank, formed with a single ear, 01, corresponding to the cars a, and fitted closely between the two ears, as seen in fig. 5, and in like manner as theordinary butt hingel Through the three ears a hole is centrally bored, into which the pintlef is placed and riveted, so that when the shank is secured, as seen in fig. 5, the cover may be easily opened and closed. It will be readily seentha't the mechanical operation required to hinge the cover to the-shank is-the chief cost in the manufacture. By my invention this expense is entirely avoided, in the manner which I will now proceed-to describe. I I
C is the cover, of the common or any desired form or design. Upon one side I form two projecting ears, 6, joined by a bar, 0, (see'fig; 4,) which said bar,'betw een the two cars, is formed round, and so as to leave an opening, e, between the saidbar and the cover. The said bar and the ears are formed from the seine piece as the cover, and generally made from cast metal. i D is the shank, provided with screw -holes, i,- bywhich it is secured to the desk in the usual manner. Upon the said shank, and in one andthe same piece, is formed a hook, E, corresponding in width to the opening e'in the cover, and the hook formed so as to set over the bar a,
as seen in figsr 1 and 3; and when thus set over the bar and secured to the desk the cover may hefreely opened l or closed, :is denoted in fig. 3; thusthe hinge is formed without other mechanical operations than that required to formthc cover and shank, whereby I reduce the-cost ot'-\manufacture by so much as the labor required to form the hinge firstdescribed. v
Having, therefore, thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is i i The combination of the cover Gand the shank D, when hinged together by a. hook formed upon the one, and alcorresponding bar on the other, substantially in the mannerdierein set forth.
' i JOHN A. BLAKE.
