THOMAS l3. TRUE, OF RIVES JUNCTION, MICHIGAN.
ADJUSTABLE WAGON-RACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 629,021, dated July 18, 1899.
Application filed April 15, 1899.
T0 on whom' it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS E. TRUE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rives Junction, in the county of Jackson and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Wagon- Racks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertaius to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in adj ustable wagon-racks; and its objects are to provide ready means of attaching, detaching, and adjusting the sides of the rack, to provide a device having no nuts, bolts, or other separable parts liable to come loose and be lost, said device also requiring no wrench or other tool to manipulate, and to provide the same with certain new and useful features hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
My invention consists, essentially, in providing the irons for connecting the boX and adjustable sideboards of the wagon-rack with a lug and hook on one member and recesses in the other member to engage the same, whereby these members are readily attached and detached and also held in various rela tive positions, as will more fully appear by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective of a device embodying my invention; Fig. 2, an enlarged detail in elevation, showing the mode of attaching the adjustable sides; Fig. 3, the position for detaching the same, and Figs. 4-, 5, and 6 illustrate various adjustments of the side when in use.
Like letters refer to like parts in all of the figures.
Arepresents the wagon box or body, of any convenient construction and provided with the transverse strips A under the bottom and projecting a suitable distance at each side.
B are suitable irons attached to the side of the box, preferably four at each side, two of which irons are attached near the respective ends of the box, as shown, and the other two are attached intermediately and have rectangular extensions B resting on the end of the strips A and attached thereto, whereby said Serial No. 713,091. (No model.)
irons incidentally serve as braces to hold the sides of the box proper in vertical position.
0 are suitable flanged arms to which the adjustable side-boards D are attached. Each arm is provided at its lower end with a lug E, adapted to engage various concave recesses F Gr H in the margins of an opening in the iron 13, and a hook I, having a shoulder to engage the side of the iron B opposite the arm to hold the latter from moving away from the side of the iron and an inclined lower side to guide the hook to place on the iron, said hook being also adapted to engage various concave recesses J K L in the outer edge of the iron for adjusting the arm at various angles, as hereinafter specified.
To attach the side-boards to the box, the latter are placed in the vertical plane of the side of the box With the arms 0 near to the irons B and with the lugs E and hooks I adjacent thereto. D longitudinally to place the inclined under sides of the hooks I will engage the recesses J in thetop of the irons, and thus raise the side-boards, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2, and finally assume the position shown in Fig. 4, with the hook engaging the side of the iron B opposite the arm 0 and resting in the recess J and the lug E engaging the recess F. The arms 0 will thus be firmly held in a vertical position and also securely attached to the irons B. By shifting the lugs to the recesses G and the hooks to the recesses K the arms will be inclined substantially at forty-five degrees, and by shifting the lugs to the recesses I-I andthe hooks to the recesses L the arms will be adjusted in anearly horizontal position. By placing the lugs in the recesses H and turning the arms to the vertical and beyond, as in Fig. 3, the hooks will be raised clear of the irons, and the sides can then be moved longitudinally, and thus detached from the box altogether.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination with a wagon-box and side-board, an iron having "an opening provided with a series of marginal recesses, said iron also having a corresponding series of recesses in its outer edge; and an arm having a lug to engage one series of said recesses By moving the side-boards and a hook to engage the other series of said recesses, substantially as described.
2. In combination with a Wagon-box and side-boards, irons attached to the Wagon-box, each iron having an internal opening provided with a series of marginal recesses and a corresponding series of recesses in its outer edge; and arms attached to the side-board, each arm provided With a lug to engage the recesses of the opening and a hook to engage the recesses in the edge of the iron, said hook also having an inclined end and a shoulder, substantially as described.
3. As an article of manufacture, an iron adapted to attach to the side of a Wagon-box and having an opening provided With a series of marginal recesses, said iron also having a corresponding series of recesses in its edge; and an arm having a lug toengage one series of said recesses and a hook to engage the other series of said recesses, substantially as described.
4. As an article of manufacture, an iron having a rectangular extension and adapted to be attached to the side and transverse strip of a Wagon-box, and also having a series of concave inner recesses and a corresponding series of concave outer recesses, and an arm having a lug to engage said inner .recesses and a hook having an inclined end and adapted to engage said outer recesses, substantially as described. I
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
THOMAS B. TRUE.
