UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.,
EDWARD W. FONDA, OF ATHENS, MICHIGAN.
WAGON-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming'part of Letters Patent No. 646,492, dated April 3, 1900.
Application iiled April 17, 1899. Serial No. 713,305. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD WV. FONDA, a citizen ot" the United States, residing at Athens, in the county of Calhoun and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wagon-Boxes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an attachment for` wagon-boxes; and it consists of an improved form of tail-board and means for readily attaching and operating the same.
The object of my invention is to provide ready means for unloading the box of its contents expeditiously and with safetyto the product being handled.
In explanation, an ordinary Wagon box mounted with the usual side boards and loaded with farm produce-such as apples, potatoes, &c.-cannot be unloaded directly with a scoop-shovel; but a part of the load must first be slowly and laboriously removed by hand before a shoveling start can be secured. To obviate this difficulty and provide means for at once placing the shovel in operation, I have devised the tail-board herein described and illustrated, which can be readily attached to any regular box.
I have illustrated my invention in the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure l is a perspective view of a Wagonbox having my improved formof tail-board in closed position. Fig. 2 is a like view of position for unloading.
Like letters refer to like parts in both drawings, in Which- A represents the Wagon-box; B, my improved tail board; C, the auxiliary sideboards; d, the narrow box-boards; e e, the tail-board hooks; f g, the staples for engaging the same; 7L, tail-board rod-brackets; c', tail-rod; j, tail-board lugs, and 7c the hookbracket bar.
The tail-board is held in position by the rod fr', inclosing the lugs j j, at its foot or lower end, and at its top by the retaining-hooks e e., which when relaxed to the staples g form an inclined plane of the same, upon Iwhich the operator maystand and against the downwardly-inclined surface of which the scoop may be used to remove the initial part of the contained but relaxed load.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
The combination with a wagon-box, of an adjustable tail-board, supported at its` foot by retaining lugs and rod, and at its top by side hooks and staples, substantially as shown and described.
In Atestimony whereof I atx my signature in presence of two witnesses;
EDWARD I/V. FONDA.
