HANDLE SECURING DEVICE.
(Application filed Feb, 1l, 1899.) (No Model.)

HANoLnsEcua|Ne DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent NO. 628,958, dated July 18, 189.9. Application filed February ll 1899. Serial No. 705,257. (No model.)
fo a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, WILHELM Louis HENRY PAPE, a citizen of the free city of Hamburg, residing at Hamburg, in the German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handle-Securing Devices, (for which I have applied for patents in England, dated January 10,1899, No. 574; in Germany, dated January 4, 1899; in Austria, dated January 16, 1899; in Hungary, dated January l5, 1899, No. 610; in France, dated January l2, 1899, No. 272,786; in Belgium, dated January 12,1899, No. 109,867; in Sweden, dated January 12, 1899, No. 52, and in Norway, dated January 12, 1899, No. 10,6440 of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object the construction of a device by means of which handles can be secured to any kind of article in use-such as brooms, india-rubber brushes for scavengers, dre-without using nails or such like. The device is so made that it can be used over and over again without any appreciable tear and wear.
In order that my said invention may be properly understood, I have hereunto appended an explanatory sheet of drawings, which shows by way of example a convenient mode of carrying out the invention.
y On the drawings, Figure 1 shows in vertical section the device applied to a broom. Fig. 2 shows the device in elevation.
The device consists, essentially, of a metal socket c, whose upper part is made with an inner quick screw-thread which `tapers slightly, as shown, and whose lower partis made with an outer quick screw-thread which also tapers slightly. It is provided with a stiffening-rim b at its upper end to give it strength. A broad ring c is screwed upon the lower part of the socket, and this ring is provided with holes d in order that it may be turned by means of a suitable key capable of catching in the said holes.
The modus operandi is as follows: The handle e to be secured (see Fig. l) hasits lower end screwed into the upper part of the socket o. In order to iix the handle as tightly as possible the socket c may be warmed slightly before the handle is screwed into it. The article to be secured to the handle-say the head f of a broom, as shown on the drawings-is now screwed onto the lower part of the socket a (which part is screwed externally, as before explained) as far as the ring o. p The ring c is then screwed down, so as t-o bear upon the back of the broom-head; In this manner the handle is firmly secured to the broom-head, while at the same time it is prevented from coming out of its socket. Especially is this the case when the wood swells under the action of damp.
The handle, with its socket, can be/ easily removed from the broom-head by first screwing back the ring c and then screwing off the head f.
The handle, as well as the socket, can be used with any new broom, and in this manner the small first cost of the device is compensated for. I
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
A device for securing handles to broomlheads and similar articles characterized by a socket d which is slightly tapered and which is provided at its upper end with an inner screw-thread and at its lower end with an outer screw-thread upon which latter a broad ring o is screwed, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the drawings annexed.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
WILHELM LOUIS HENRY PAPE.
