HANDLE FASTENING.
APPLIGUION FILED MM2?, 191.1.
Patented Sept. 29, Mi.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE- IRWIN G. BURTON, or AsEuEY PARK, NEW JEnsEY.
HANDLE-FASTNING.
Specification. of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 29, 1914.
Application filed January 27, 1914. Serial No. 814,681.
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IRWIN G. BURTON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Asbury Park, in the county of Monmouth and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Handle-l1`astening, of
which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved handle fastening more especially designed for fastening wooden handles in hammers, axes, hatchets and other tools and devices, and arranged to permanently fasten the handle in place in the socket of the tool Without unduly weakening the handle.
' is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts .in all the views.
Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of the handle fastening as applied for fastening a handle in a hatchet; Fi 2 is a perspective view of the hollow we ge; and Fig. 3 is a similar view of the handle.
The end A of the wooden'handle A is adapted to engage the socket B in the tool B of any approved construction. The handle end A is provided with a lengthwiseextending split Azterminating in an opening or recess A3 and into the said split A2 is adapted to be driven a hollowwedge C so as to spread the handle end A in the socket B to securely fasten the end Al in the socket B, as will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 1. The wedge is hollow throughout its extent and is in the form of a shell approXimatel rectangular in shape and open at bot-h en s.v
In'order to prevent the wedge C from be# coming loose, use is made of molten metal D oured into the hollow wedge C so asto fill the opening or chamber A3 as well as the hollow wedge C, it being understood that as soon as the molten metal hardens it securely locks the hollow wedge Cy against outward movement in the split A2. It 1s understood that the opening A3' is considerl ably larger' than thel opening 'at theinnerl or small end ofthe wedge C 'and hence When the metal D yhas set and hardened in the opening A3 1and in the wedge itforms a very strong bar against the wedge (pulling out of y the split when the tool4 is use From the foregoing it will' be seen that the hollow wedge serves to spread the handle end A in the socket B', and at the same time the metal in filling the hollow wedge and being held in thejopening A3 prevents the wedge from outward movement and consequently the handle end A is permanently and very securely fastened in the socket B of the tool B. 'y
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In combination with a handle havingl a split and an opening into which leads the inner end-of the said-split, a Wedge in the forni of a hollow shell open at both ends,
the said wedge engaging the said split, the v.
inner open end of said wedge being of less size than the said opening in the handle and reaching to the same and a material capable to set and harden and filling the said opening and the said wedge.
2. -I'n combination a tool having a socket, a handle having asocket end fitting into the -said socket, the said socket end being provided With a transverse opening and a split leading from the terminal of the handle end to the said opening, a wedge in the form of an approximately rectangular shell, hollow throughout its extent and open at both ends, the said wedge being driven into the said split to spread the socket end of the handle in the said socket, the said transverse opening in the socket end of the handle being larger than the opening at the inner or small end of the said wedge and a metal filling the said transverse opening and t-he said hollow wedge.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
IRWIN G. BURTON.
