LEWIS KUHN, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
SASH-CORD HOLDER.
sentiments forming part of Letters Patent No. 627,126, dated June 20, 1899.
Application filed November 21, 1898. Serial No. 697,069. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LEWIs KUHN, a citizen "of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Cord Holders; and I do hereby declare the follow ing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in sash-cord holders; audit consists in the novel combination and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter more particularly described and claimed.
Inthe drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention, showing its application to a window-frame. Fig. 2 is a perspective viewof my complete invention, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view ofthe lower end of the holder with parts broken away.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and practical detachable holder which is adapted to be temporarily. secured to the window-frame at any convenient position along the vertical portion thereof and is designed to holdone or both of the sash-cords in a convenient position to be grasped or handled by the operator while the sashes or other parts comprising the window are being fittedor adjusted, and thereby dispense with the necessity of using a step-ladder or climbing upon the Window frame or sill thereof in order to reach the cord when it is necessary to attach the same to the sash; and it consists of an'angular-shaped plate the vertical portion of which is provided with a projecting pin having an upper flat edge, by means of which the said plate is temporarily secured in position to the window-frame, and a horizontal curved portion having two forks which are adapted to receive the sash-cords, a knot having been previously'tied in said cords, and adapted to come in contact with the under surface of said horizontal curved portion of the plate or holder.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a portion of an ordinary window-frame, showing the sash-cord 2held in position and in easy reach of the operator by my invention.
The holderconsists of a single piece of metal having a vertical flat portion 3, the upper horizontal curved portion thereof projecting a suitable distance and provided with two forks 4 4, which are adapted to receive the sash cords or ropes 2 in a manner as shown in Fig. 1. Projecting from the rear or opposite surface of the vertical portion 3 of the holder is a pin 5, having an upper fiat edge or surface which is adapted to be forced into the window-frame 1, by the employment of a hammer or other tool, which is sufficient to temporarily hold the sash-cords in the desired position.
After the sashes have been fitted and it is desired to secure the cords to the same the same are removed from the fork portion of the holder, after which the said holder is instantly removed from the window-frame by taking hold of the fork portion of the holder and pulling it from the window-frame, leaving a very small aperture or opening in the same, which is afterward covered by the guidestrips for the sashes.
By the employment of my invention considerable time and inconvenience are overcome and the sash-cords are not lost or caused to pass intothe window-frame or weight-box, as is sometimes the case, and thereby obviate the necessity of removing a portion of the window-frame in order to obtain the ropes or cords.
By the employment of the horizontal curved portion 6 of the holder the knot tied into the lower end of the sash-cord 2 is prevented from passing off from said holder.
By forming a flat surface on the upper edg of the pin 5 the holder will remain in position after it has been secured to the window-frame notwithstanding the strain brought to bear upon the same by the sash-cords, and consequently will not cut through the woodwhich forms the said frame; but when the said holder is desired to be removed from the windowframe the lower end of the fiat portion 3 of the same will operate as a fulcrum by grasping the curved portion, and the holder thereby is easily moved.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim is A sash-cord holder, comprising a vertical flat portion, a horizontal curved forked portion forming a continuation of the same, and crum in removingv the same, substantially as 10 a pin projecting from the opposite side of said j described.v
fiat vertical portion, at a suitable distance In testimony whereof I a'ffix my signature from the lower end of the same, and having in presence of two witnesses. 5 an upper fiat surface, whereby the holder is prevented from being withdrawn from the F LEWIS KUHN' window-frame when strain is brought against Witnesses: it in a vertical direction, the lower end of the H. A. UHL, fiat portion of the holder operating as a ful- O. F. KELLER.
