To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that GEORGE OATECART SMITH, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at 514 ham, London, England, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash- Cord Holders, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to construct a sash cord holder for hanging windows, so that the sash stile can be easily and readily prepared for attachment of the sash cord, no nails or screws are required for attachment of the sash cord, and a broken sash cord can be readily removed, and a new one attached without it being necessary to remove the sash from the frame as is now the case.

My invention will be readily understood from the following description aided by the accompanying drawings in which Figure l. is a side sectional elevation of suliicient of a window sash to illustrate my cord holder, which is also shown in sectional elevation. Fig. 2. is an edge view of the window sash corresponding to Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a plan view and Fig. 4.a side elevation of the cord holder. one side member of the sash.

For the purpose of my invention, I form my sash cord holder of metal in the form of a cylindrical hollow case, see Figs. 3 and 4, having one side A iat and the other cut away to form' an opening B to receive the knot O of the sash cord D.

The base E of the holder is lat and provided with a hole F so as to be `readily removable from the sash stile G, as will be hereafter explained. v

The top H is angled or beveled, and is provided with a hole I through which the cord D is passed, as will be seen in Fig. l.

The sash stile G is provided with a groove or channel J, along its entire length, and the part where the holder is positioned is in alinement with the groove lJ and situate at the bottom of the sash stile and is drilled out, the end of the hole being angled to conform to the top H of the holder, so as to insure the holder gripping the sash stile and preventing the cord pulling the holder out sidewise, and damaging the thin edge oi the llandsworth road, Olapl Fig. 5. is a section of' l sash stile in either side of the flat portion A l of the holder.

In litting a new sash cord, all that is necessary is to lift the sash and prop it up with a piece of wood, then by a tool inserted in thel hole F removing the the remainder of the cord D through the groove J, now remove the parting bead between the upper and lower sashes, and the pocket piece in the stile of frame, remove the weight and untie or cut away the cord attached thereto, then take the new cord, pass it through the pulley, and secure it to the weight in the ordinary way, then draw up the weight and secure it against the pulley to get the length of cord which will be three inches longer than the length from pulley to the sill of sash frame. Next pass the lcord down through groove J, attach it to the cord holder as shown, insert holder in its proper place, replace pocket piece, and parting bead and the operation is complete.

Vhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A device for attaching sash cords to sashes, comprising a hollow casing adapted to be inserted into a sash frame, the top of the casing being beveled and provided with a reduced opening for the passage of the sash cord, a side of the casing being provided with a relatively large opening to admit the holder and pulling bottom of the casing being provided with a contracted opening to adapt it to receive a removing tool.

2. A device for attaching sash cords to sashes, comprising a hollow casing of substantially cylindrical form, one side of the casing being iiattened to provide a stile engaging surface, and provided at its opposite side with an enlarged opening to admit the of the casing being beveled downwardly toward the flat side thereof and provided with areduced opening to permit the passage of the sash cord.
