AUGUST F. GUSTAFSON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SHUTTER-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 504,921, dated September 12, 1893.
Application iiled June 3, 1893. Serial No. 476,483. (No model.)
To wZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, AUGUST F. GUsTAFsoN, of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Blind-Fasteners, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention is an improvement in the class of blind-fasteners in which a combined latch and catch is pivoted near the outer edge of the blind and operated by a pull-rod, or draw-bar.
The invention is embodied in the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts hereinafter described.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures and letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figurel is a horizontal section through a blind having the fastener applied thereto, and a partial horizontal section through a portion of the window frame, the blind being shown in an open and locked position. Fig. 2 is a section similar to Fig. 1, but the latch of the blind is shown out of engagement with its keeper; and Fig. 3 is an inner face view of the attachment.
The blind fastener consists primarily of a plate A, a latch B, which may be of the usual construction, being provided with a head at each end, said heads being designated as 10 and 11, and a draw rod 12, connected with the latch, by means of which rod the latch is to be removed from engagement with its keeper.
The plate A, may be of any desired size or shape. Ordinarily, however, it is made somewhat rectangular, and thelatch B, is pivotally connected with one end of the plate, said latch being engaged by a spring 13 of any description attached to the plate and exerting constant tension against the latch, the tension of the spring being adapted to hold the latch at all times in position to engage with either the keeper 14, located upon the building and adapted to hold the blind in an open position, or with a keeper'l, located upon the window frame and adapted to maintain the blind in a closed positione The draw rod 12, is pivotally connected with the latch B on the inner side of its pivoted point, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and the said draw rod extends along the inner face of the plate A, and terminates at its inner end in a handle 16, which handle extends out beyond the front face of the plate through an opening 17 produced therein. By thus pivoting the draw-bar to the latch, at a point between its fulcrum land the outwardly-projecting catch on its head, 10, I dispense with a link, or other device, heretofore employed, toi-wit: with supplementary means of connection between the latch and draw-bar, and also with a lever for operating the draw-bar.
When the device is attached to a blind the blind is provided with a cavity or recess 18 of suflicient length to receive the draw bar 12, and the said cavity is covered by the plate A, but the cavity opens mainly upon the inner face of the shutter or blind, but at one end extends through to the opposite face in order to permit the latch B to extend beyond both the inner and the outer surfaces of the blind.
It is evident that by pulling the draw bar 12 in an inwardly direction when the blind is open the outer end of the latch will be drawn away from its keeper let in direction of the hinges of the shutter or blind. Thus the latch will be prevented from engaging again with its keeper, since the very moment that the draw bar is manipulated the shutter or blind may be turned upon its hinges to carry it to a closed position; and when the shutter or blind is closed, a like movement of the draw bar will disengage the inner head of the latch from the frame keeper 15.
It will be observed that as the outer head of the latch engages the side of the keeper 14 adjacentto the window frame, comparatively no strain is exerted upon the hinges of the blind or shutter when the latch is manipulated, and thatthe device is exceedingly simple, durable and economic, and is capable of being readily applied and of being expeditiously and conveniently manipulated. I
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- IOO Theimprovement herenbefore set forth,t0 and also pivoted to the latch at a point be- Wit, the spring-actuated latch, pivoted in a tween its pivotal point and catch, all cornplate attached to the inner side of the blind, bined as shown and described.
