SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent no; 6213 64, satea'rtnele, 1899.
Application filed May "I, 1898. Serial No- 680,073, alo model.) s I To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE KLEIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Storing and Shipping Packages, of which the following is a specilie My invention relates to improvements in packages for storing and shipping lard, jellies, &c.; and itsobjects are, first, to provide a package that maybe easily rendered watertight; second, to avert the danger of the bottom becoming loose or being forced out of" place in handling, and, third, to provide a convenient and inexpensive appliance with which to remove the cover when it is desired to open the package to remove its contents. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in-the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section of a package, showing the manner of applying the top and bottom. Fig. 2 is a section of a portion of a package, showing the construction of the top and bottom; and Fig. 3 is a perspective of a top with the appliance for removing it in normal position.
Similar letters refer to similar parts th roughout the several views.
I prefer that the package be made inthe form of a pail, larger at the top than at the bottom, so that the cover and bottom may be forced to a close bearing with the sides.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents a vertical section .of the body of the package. i i
B represents the top or cover, andO rep' resents the bottom of the package.
My invention consists not in the form of the package nor in the material of which it is con of the package.
in constructing the top and bottom I make 1'898. structed, but in the construction of'the'joinn between the top and bottom and the side walls I I the edges slightly'more tapering or beveling than 'the taper of the bodyof the package and somewhat ragged, as indicated in Fig.-- 2 ,and theupper edge left to form a thin projecting sheet or flap, so that when they are forced to place the upper corner of the edge will turn ;up slightly and press. against the surfac'e of thebody, thus making a bearing somewhat broader than the thickness of the top or hottom,;as indicated at cf. When the top or bottom is fenced to place, the edge a will conform itself to aperfectbearing with the sidewalls of the package, as indicated by the dotted lines in' Fig 'i.
In Fig. 2 I have somewhat exaggerated the bevel, as well'as the ragged nature of the edge 0, not as illustrating its exact form and condition, but/as more plainly showing the manner in which it is applied to form a broader and more perfect surface of contact.
For'the purpose of facilitating the removal of the cover Isecure a thin oblong strip of any suitable material that is more or less flexible to'the cover by means ofa small staple, as I), through near the longitudinal center of the strip b, so that the strip can be bent up, as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 3, and form a convenient thumb-piece or handle.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
In a storing and shipping package, a relatively thin receptacle, and a relatively thick top or bottom beveled slightly more than the taperrof the receptacle and fitted with a thin ragged projecting edge to enter said receptacle and press upon and closely adhere to the inner surface thereof, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
