tirant FFQE,
DENIS DOODY, OF TJONTREAL, QUEBEC, CANADA.
SHPPING BOX.
Application filed November 5, 1921.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that l, DENIS DooDY, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at i Montreal, in the Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shipping Boxes; and l do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to ,which it appertains to make and use the same'.
rlhe present invention relates to new and useful improvements in collapsible or rigid shipping cases to be made from wood, or any pliable material.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a collapsible box or shipping case formed from suitable material connected by end members which retain the same in extended position.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a shipping case or box having metallic end frames for securing the end members in position and likewise holding the top, bottom and side members in proper relative position, the said box being capable of collapsing when the said end frames are removed.
Still another object of' the invention is the provision of a box having novel means for locking the closure in position, so that the same can be sealed to prevent unauthorized opening or to prevent the same from being tampered with in any manner whatsoever.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a collapsible box such as above referred to which will be comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, reliable and eflicient in use, and readily operated.
With the above and other objects in view, the present invention resides in the novel features of construction, formations, combinations and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the present application, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the box, with the cover in closed position;
Figure 2 is a similar view of one end there" of showing the closure unlocked and ready for opening;
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view taken through one end of the box on a verti cal plane; and,
Serial No. 513,182.
Figure 4 is a similar view taken on a horizontal plane.
Figure 5 is a plan view of the blanks from which the box is formed;
Figure 6 is a plan view of the blank from which one of the'end frames is formed; and,
Figure 7 is a perspective view showing the end frame partly bent to the position for receiving the ends of the body portion.
Referring now the accompanying drawings by corresponding characters of reference throughout the several views, the numeral 10 designates. in general my improved box which consistsof the opposite side members 11, a bottom 12, top 13, and end members 14. The top, opposite sides, and bottom of the box are all formed from a single blank of material, shown in Figure 5, while the end members 14 are formed from smaller blanks which are likewise shown in Figure 5.
The end frames 15 which secure the top, bottom, side and end members together, consist of single strips of material formed in sections 16 so arranged that they can be bent int-o rectangular form as shown in Figure 1. The members may also be bent longitudinally to provide gripping lianges 17 for engaging the foldable end lianges` 18 formed on the top, bottom and side members, while the opposite sides thereof are formed with flanges 19 which when bent form grooves 20 for the insertion of the members 14 therein.
The adjacent ends of the sections are cut away, as shown at 21 so that the same can be properly bent without interference.
A locking tongue 22 is provided upon the upper section 16 and is designed to engage a. notch 23 formed in the adjacent end of the section 16 which engages the opposite side of the box. rlhe tongue 22 is also formed with a notch 24 for interloclc ing engagement with the notch 23, while the material adjacent these notches is provided with aligning openings 25 designated to receive a suitable sealing means, whereby the box can be sealed and prevented against unauthorized opening.
In use the end frames 15 are bent along the dotted lines, as shown in Figure 6, to the position shown in Figure 7, and then into the rectangular shape, as shown in Figure 1 with the top, bottom and side members iirrnlj` gripped therebetween, and the end mem ers 14 iitted in the grooves 20. The top is provided with a locking fiange 26 which projectsA over one of the side members for holding the contents ofthe container against displacement.
If it is found desirable to construct the box or shipping case from Wood or other similar material, the top, bott-om and side members are separable and so grooved as to receive the metallic end members bent inopposite directions.
lt will be seen-from the foregoing'description taken in connection With the accom-- panyi-ng drawings, that a box is provided Which can be used for shipping purposes andthe like and which will fulilliallv of the necessary and desired requirements,- and yit will also be seen that byreinoving the end members A the box can be collapsed orV folded out fiat, so that a numberA ofv boxes can beshipped at one time, andy also to-require-'butf ver-y littlespace for storage.
It should alsofbe manifes"J ythat a boxisl provided Which willfiillil all of the necessary requirements of such a device, and itv should be understood inthis connection that the body may be constructed from any suitable material and that the top, bottoni andside members niay be formed integrz'il or formediii separate sections as might be desired and hinged-together, and it shall' be additionally noted that various minor changes in the specific vdetails of construction can be resorted to Within the scope ofl Vthe appended claims, Without departing from the spirit orsaerificiiig any,7 of the advantagesv of the invention. f
Having thus fully describeditlieinvention',
bers, one end of each frame having a notch.; therein, and a fiange 'oni the end ofV each frainehavii'ig a notch therein for engaging tlie'notchin the frame, .as andv for'v the purposes-Set forth. Y
2. rihe herein described box,.comprisinga body portion, consisting` of a top, bottom and side lmembers, endv members engaging" the free edges thereof, a frame for securing the box rigidly against displacementand holding the said. end' members in position,
including flanges adapted forattacliment to the top and bottom of the box a-ndlflaiiges forming grooves for receiving` the end mem'- bers, one eiid of each frame navinga notch therein, a flange on the end ofgeach frame having a notch therein forengagiiig. the notcliiii the frame,..tlie said frames andtheir flanges having openings therein,registering when the box is in oaerativeposition, as andfor the purposes set forth.
In Witness Whereofl havehereiinto set my hand.
