UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HORACE THOMPSON, OF CONCORD, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
I REVERSIBLE HANDLE FOR BROOMS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 626,820, dated June 13, 1899.
Application filed March 18, 1899.
To (all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HORACE THOMPSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Concord, in the county of Merrimac and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Push-B rooms, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to prevent the uneven wearing and obtain the most effectual working of. the broom as used in street-cleaning departments. I attain .this object by the mechanism set forth in the accompanying drawings, inwhicli- Figure 1 is a plan view of my improvement attached to the brooms heretofore in use; Fig. 2, a side view of the same, showing the angle of the handle and relation of my improvement as applied; Fig. 3, a cross-section of my device removed from the broom, showing the elliptic spring as applied to the receptacle for the handle, and a retaining device to the plate when properly attachedsecures the entire mechanism to the broom-block.
Similar lettersrefer to similar parts thro u ghout the several views.
The plate B, I preferably attach to the broom-backAby means of the screws 0, of any number to hold itsecurely thereon, or by any other means adapted thereto so long as the plate is held firmly in contact with the block A. Through the center of the plate B passes the rivet b into the casting 0, near its center, the rivet Z) being of such a length as to protrude through the casting or support C sufficient to receive the elliptic spring D and when headed down holds in position securely the plate B, casting O, and elliptic spring D, but not so closely as to prevent the rotation of the casting or support for the handle upon the plate B when desired.
To prevent the movement of the casting 0 upon the plate B, except at the desired time, I have secured to the said casting an elliptic spring D by the rivets a and Z), this spring conforming to the shape of the casting G and plate B. Near the free ends of the said spring D and running parallel with the block A is a rectangular slot cl, adapted to fit upon Serial No. 709,659. (No modelJ the projections e on the plate 13, which I preferably accomplish, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1, by cutting a half-circle in the plate B at such a distance from its center when turned at a right angle with the face of the plate through its radius, which remains intact, as to form a projection corresponding to and entering the slot d, the ends of the spring being turned up to attain easy access to the free ends of the spring when desired to reverse the broom, as would be the case had v tion broadly but That I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a push-broom the combination of the plate B, secured to the block A, the said plate having an opening near its center adapted to receive the rivet or bolt b, the said bolt being of such length as to receive the casting or support 0, having a corresponding opening to receive the aforesaid bolt and fittingloosel y thereon and free to turn in either direction, and an elliptic spring 0, adapted to said casting or support and secured thereto by any means suitable for that purpose, and free to rotate therewith, the free ends of the said spring having openings adapted to rest upon the projections of the plate B, substantially as, and for the purpose herein set forth and described.
HORACE THQMPSON.
