SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 330,774, dated November 17, 1885.
Application med August 9, 1884. serial No. 140,101. (Model.)
T0 a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be' it known that I, FRANK GRONIN, of Deming, in the county of Grant and Territory of New Mexico, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tool-Handles, of which the following is a full. clear, and exact description.
My invention, which is applicable to boringinstruments generally, consists in doubleratchet mechanism constructed for easy adjustment to allow rotation of the bit in either direction, as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the gures.
Figure l is an elevation, partly sectional,of my improved tool-handle with the bit of a cork-screw applied. Fig. 2 is a plan view with the handle in section, and Fig. 3 is a transverse section.
. A is the handle, formed with a` recess at mid-length to receive the ratchet mechanism. One side of the recess is covered by a slideplate, B, and the bottom by a plate, B', which is apertured to allow the bit f to pass through, and the two plates B B are in one piece. YOn the end of bit f is fasteneda ratchet-Wheel, E, which takes on plate B', and the bit is made with a shoulder taking against the under side of the plate. The plate B is formed with cross-grooves b b. The base ends of the pawls D rest in the grooves b. The pins or wires G (preferably of spring material) are secured centrally of their length to the plate B, bent outward therefrom, and have their ends passed through holes in the pawls, the spring of the pins retaining the ends of the pawls in the grooves b, the pins and the slots hinging the pawls loosely to the plate. A spiral spring, F, attached at its ends to the pawls, acts to draw them toward each other and in contact with the wheel at its opposite sides. The plate B is Slotted at e for the shank of a slide, C, to pass through, and the inner end of the slide is made with forks c, inclining outward against the pawls, so as to hold them apart a distance that will allow only one to engage the wheel at once.
By moving slide C in one direction one pawl is engaged with and the other freed from tie ratchet. and by an opposite `movement of the slide the pawls are reversed, so that the handle can be set to turn the bit in one direction or the other, as desired.
The mechanism is all carried by the plates B B', and can thus be removed with the plates.
I have shown the cork-screw applied to my improved tool-handle, but, as before stated, said handle is intended for .use with all sorts of hand-tools requiring a rotary motion.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a tool-handle, the combination, with the plate B and the ratchet-wheel E, socketed toreceive the head of a tool, of the pawls D, hinged to plate B, the spring F, and the twoarmed slide C, substantially as described.
2.In a tool-holder, the slide-platel B, constructed with slots b b, to hold the edges of the pawls D and permit them to swing thereon, in combination with the spring-pins G, held centrally to said plate and having their end projecting through holes in the pawls,
substantially as shown and described.
3. In atool-holder, the spring F, attached by its extremities to the pawls D, for drawing the pawls against the opposite sides of the ratchet-wheel, in combination with the slide O, having inclined forks c c, and the ratchetwheel E, substantially as shown and described.
4. In a tool-handle, the plate B B', bent at a right angle, and having its part B slotted for the slide C, and grooved at b, and its part B apertured for the tool-head, as set forth, whereby all the working parts can be assembled on said plates lbefore attaching the same to the stock ofthe handle.
