FRANZ ENGEL, O F CAMDEN, NEWT JERSEY.
` Letters Patent No. 62,620, dated lllm'ch 5, 1867.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that', FRANZ ENGEL, of Camden, in the county of Camden, and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and improved Fan-Blower; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will' enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in whichp Figure represents a verticalv central section of this invention, the line x x, iig. 2, indicating the plane of section.
Figure 2 is a. horizontal section 'of the same taken in the plane indicated by the line y y, iig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention relates to a fan-blower which is based on the principle of the archimedian screw. The screw, which is formed of two steep spiral flanges resembling a double-screw thread, is fitted in a cylinder, from the bottom part of which extends the spout or bla-st pipe. The upper part of the screw, which projects above the cylinder, is provided with a cylindricaljacket, so that by revolving said screw the air is caught and forced out through the spout or blast pipe with considerable force.
A represents a. plain cylindrical case madeof sheet metal, or any other suitable material, and open on the top. From the bottom of this case extends a conical spout or blast pipe'B, which is intended to conduct the blast to the ire or other spot\where it may be needed. C is a screw formed by two spiral iianges, which are secured to a central shaft, D, as clearly shown in iig. 1 of thc drawing. The shaft D passes through the bottom of the case A, and it has its bearing at one end in a step, a, and at the opposite end in an arched bridge, 6, or it may be secured in any other suitable manner, and if said shaft is in position the poripheries of the flanges nearly touch the inner circumference of the c'ase A, so that the screw will revolve freely in said case. Y The upper part of the screw projects beyond the case, and it is provided'with a cylindrical jacket, c, so that said screw on being,- revolved will catch the air and force it out with considerable force through the spout or blast pipe B.
The fan-blowcr is intended particularly for blacksmiths fires, but it canalso be used with advantage for blast furnaces, cupolas, or for all operations in which a strong blast of air is required.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The screw C, provided with a jacket c at itsend, and operating in a case A, from which extends ablast pipe B, substantially as and for thc purpose described. i
