Description

Lime Kiln.
Patented Aug. 27, 1867;

IMPROVED LIME-KILN.
' El 5x11211111: mast is it time fitters was tut making part at flge same.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
' Be it known that I, LUTHER GIBBs, of Fremont, in the county of Sandusky, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful improvement in Lime-Kilns; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which--- Figure 1 is a vertical transverse section.
Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal section.
Figure 3 is a horizontal section on the line w w, fig. 2.
Figure 4 is a horizontal section on the line 3 y, fig. 2.
The same letters are employed in all the figures in the indication of identical parts.
A is the body of the kiln; B the furnaces, placed on each side, having doors B The fuel is burned upon the grate B. G is the ash-pit, closed by a door, G. D is the fire-chamber, into which the flame is carried from the furnaces on each side. Four fl'ucs, D, are constructed in the fire-chamber, leading from the corners thereof into the eupolaE. The draught through the side flues D, in the sides of the fire-chamber, will cause the flame, in passing into the cupola when it is filled with stone, to be expanded, causing a more equal burning of the lime in the cupola. The kettle F is ,made rectangular, and, measured lengthwise, it is longer than the diameter of the cupola at its base, which is at the top of the fire-chamber. The object of this construction is to prevent the lime from lodging as it falls, after being burned, and clogging in the kettle. The draw-fiues G G G, closed by doors, are placed 'at the bottom of the kettle, which tapers towards the bottom. When the lime is drawn from the draw-flue G, the stones on that side will fall, leaving asurface above, exposed to the action of the fires. The same result will follow when it is drawn from the draw-flue G when drawn from G, the centre will fall. By means of this arrangement of the draw-fiues the relative positions of the stones in the kiln may be varied as required during the process of burning.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A kiln for burning lime, when constructed with two furnaces, B B, and a central fire-chamber, D, in corn tinuous line across the kiln, and with lines D in the corners of the fire-chamber, and with a kettle, F, of greater.
longitudinal measurement than the diameter of the cupola E,arid furnished with three draw-fines, G G G said parts being constructed and arranged for use in the manner setfdrth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
LUTHER GIBBS.
