SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 626,127, dated May 30, 1899.
Application filed December 10, 1896. Serial No. 615,165. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER ANDREW, of the city of New York, (Brooklyn,) in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has reference to a novel construction in a bottle, the object. being to provide a construction by means of which the bottle can be sealed in a manner that efiectually prevents the opening of the bottle without fracturing or destroying certain parts thereof, so that the bottle cannot be reused without detection.
The invention consists in the features of construction hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a central vertical section of the neck portion of a bottle constructed in accordance with this invention and before being sealed. Fig. 2 is a similar view when the bottle is sealed.
In accordance with the principle involved by this invention I provide a bottle with a frangible portion and a sealing-chamber, so that after the bottle is corked in the usual manner and then sealed the said seal cannot be removed, so that to attain access to the bottle it is necessary to fracture the bottle at the frangible portion, which is situated just above the cork.
Referring now to said drawings, 1 indicates the neck of a bottle, having a frangible portion 2, consisting conveniently of an interior groove just above the seat that receives the cork 3. Above the frangible portion 2 the neck is provided with a globular chamber 4, opening at the mouth of the bottle. This chamber is sealed with a rotatable plug 5, that fits closely within the chamber. It is seen, therefore, that the ends of the chamber being smaller than the body of the chamber the plugis effectively held from displacement and, furthermore, cannot be drilled out, since it turns within the chamber and therefore would turn with a drill applied thereto to bore it out. In use the bottle is filled and corked in the usual manner, after which a layer or lining 6, preferably of paper and fitting within the chamber, is inserted. Then the metal is poured into the mouth of the bottle until it fills the globular chamber. The lining, it is found, effectively protects the cork from being burned, as well as preventing the bottle from being cracked, and is not burned out, so that it forms a lining between the globular chamber and the globular plug to permit the plug to turn easily in the manner referred to.
It is obvious that the bottle is susceptible to various slight changes without departing from the spirit of this invention, and, furthermore, that a suitable trade-mark can be applied to the neck surrounding the globular chamber, and since this portion is broken be fore removingthe cork it is seen that the bottle cannot be reused for the purpose of deceiving the public, although it can be used for ordinary purposes.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A bottle having a neck, the upper portion of which is enlarged to form a globular chamher, the neck also being provided at an intermediate point and below the globular chamber with an internal breaking groove, in combination with a stopper permanently seated in the lower portion of the neck, and
a globular plug situated in the globular chamber above the breaking groove and rotatable in all directions in order to prevent drilling, substantially as described.
