@uiten gieten getrnt @frn THOMAS B. DE FOREST, OF BIRMINGHAM, CONNECTICUT.
Letters Patent 1Y0. 62,533, dated iarcL 5, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUKLES.
@in tlgrhulc nient tu in lgrsc @toilets gjfltcnt 2mb making putt n tige sinus.
TO ALL WHOM I'l MAY CONCERN:
Bc it known thatI, THOMAS B. DE FOREST, of Birmingham, in the county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Buckles; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, iu-
Figure 1, a face or front view of the buckle.
Figures 2, 3, 4, and 5, the construction ofthe buckle; and in Figures G and 7, its dperation.
This buckle is designed more particularly for hoop-skirt bands, but is equally applicable for other, like purposes, and consists in the peculiar construction ofthe slide or clasp which grasps or clamps the baud so as to prevent its withdrawal.
To enable others to construct and use my improvement I will proceed to describe the same as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
A is the frame of the buckle, formed as seen in fig. 2, from wire or other suitable material. B is the clasp or slide, forincd as seen in fig. 3, from sheet metal, having pcrforations, a, corresponding in position to the two ends of the frame A, and a slot, d, so as to leave a bar, f, for the purpose hereafter shown; the slide is then doubled, as seen in lig. 4, and c two ends ofthe frame are passed through the two perforations a before the frame is completed, and when so completed the slide rests upon the two ends of the frame, as seex in fig. 1, the bar f and the slot d of the slide lyinl uppn thcunder side ofthe frame, while thebar, or (as-it is hereafter termed) the clasp, upon thc upper side, and in position, relatively to the frame, as seen in g. 5, and so as to move freely on the frame. The rear bar of the frame is completed in the usual manner, and the band secured thereto.
The operation of the buckle is as follows: One end of the band, which is denoted in red, beinfai secured to the bar, as at C, in lig. 6, and passing around the body, the other end is passed through the slot d in the slide between the clasp B and frame A, as seen in` lig. 6, then drawn up, as in lig. 7; the band forces the slide toward the bar of the frame Af, by ,bea-ring against the bar f of the slide, which draws theclasp B firmly against the band and clamps it upon the bar ofthe frame A, and holds the band in whatever positiouit is set. To release the band, simply take hold ofthe projecting points z' on the slide and draw the slide back, as in iig. 6, and the band is released.
I do not broadly claim a buckle constructed so as to secure the band by a bar sliding on the frame, but what I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
'Ihe combination of the clasp B, constructed with a slot d and bar f, with the frame A, when the clasp B is above and the barf below, or vice versa, so that the strap or band drawing against the bar f draws the clasp B upon and so as to hold the strap, substantially in the manner herein set forth.
THOS. B. DE FOREST.
