BRACE-WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 625,209, dated May 16,- 1899.

Be it known that l, ELMER E. STEAR, a citizen of the United States,residing at Millstone,
in the county of Elk and State of Pennsylvania,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Brace-Wrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in an interdependentbracemember to effectively operate it, and whereby a continuous, rapid, and forceful means is attained for applying and .removing nuts of varying shapes and sizes and dispensing with the use of independcut wrenches of different sizes.
The invention consists of the construction and arrangement of .parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed. g In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sideelevation of a wrench embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan View of the same partially broken away.
Referring to the drawings, wherein similar numerals are utilized to indicate corresponding parts in the views, the numeral 1 designates the brace member, having a swiveled head or analogous device 2 to rest in the hand or against the chest of the operator, a stock 3 and a crank t with a grip 5, all of said parts representing in combination a construction substantially like the ordinary boringbrace.
The invention resides in the partial con: tinuity only of the crank 4: and the fixed addition thereto of an angle-arm 6, extending from the inner termination of a stationary wrench member 7, having a substantially V- shaped jaw S on the lower portion of the outer termination and an apertured guide 9 in rear of said jaw. By means of the guide 9 a movable wrench memberlO is held in relative position to the stationary wrench member, and has an outer head 11, also provided with a substantially V-shaped jaw 12 to coact with the jaw 8 in grasping and holding a nut. The shank 13 of said wrench member 10 is preferably rounded and screw threaded, as at 14, and is adjustable through a smooth opening 15 in the vertical part of the angle-arm 6, adjacent the meeting-point thereof with the stationary wrench member. This opening 15 also extends through an integral collar 15" at the rear of the angle-arm 6. On the part of the shank 13 in rear of the vertical part of the angle-arm a screw-sleeve 16, having a roughened or milled head 17, is adjustably mounted and is recessed at the front to fit over the rear end of said collar 15, and between the front end of said sleeve and the adjacent part of the arm 6 a spring-washer 1S surrounds said collar and is split for application and clamping purposes.
In operation the stationary wrench member 7 has its jaw 8 placed against one portion of the nut, and the movable wrench member 10 has its jaw 12 fitted against an opposite part of the nut. To primarily arrange the jaw of the movable wrench member against the nut, said member is pushed away from or drawn toward the jawS of the member 7, which can be readily accomplished by drawing or pushing the shank through the opening 15 in the angle-arm. After the two jaws are applied to the nut they canbe easily tightened by adjusting the sleeve 16 to cause the front end thereof to bear against the washer 18 and force the latter into close engagement with the angle-arm 6, and thereby immovably bind the parts. The nut can now be quickly removed or applied by rotating the crank 4:, which correspondingly revolves the wrench members while the swiveled head 2 is held by or against the person of the operator. By
' greasing the spindles theroof, as it will fit different-sized burs and in the event of removal hold them in the socket formed by the jaws 8 and 12 until they are replaced on the spindles, thus preventing dirt and grease from getting on the handsvof the operator, which usually results by the use of difierent kinds of Wrenches.
Changes in the proportions; dimensions, and minor details could be made to accommodate variations in the size of device without departing from the nature or spirit of the invention.
Having thusdescribed the invention, what is claimed as new is- In a wrench of the character set forth, the combination of a brace, a stationary wrench member rigidly connected to the crank of said brace by an angle-arm and having a jaw thereon, the said angle-arm having an unthreaded opening extending therethrough and an integral rearward]y-projecting collar through which said opening is continued, an
