SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 623,800, dated April 25, 1899.
Application filed December 3, 1898. Serial No. 698,152. (No model.)
To all whom, it ntay concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES L. MARTIN, of Marion Center, in the county of Indiana and State of Pennsylvania, have invented newand useful Improvements in \Vrenches, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to that class of nutwrenches in which the jaws are in the form of two spring-prongs adjusted toward and from each other by a screw and adapted especially for application to abit-brace, so as to be operated thereby.
This specification is the, disclosure of one form of my invention, while the claim defines the actual scope thereof.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the wrench. Fig. 2 is a similar View with parts in section, and Fig. 3 is a front elevation thereof.
In the practical construction of the class of wrenches to which my invention belongs it has been found to be a great disadvantage that the spring-prongs frequently twist and spring out of proper relative position, and by being forced into too great proximity they are weakened and prematurely broken. My invention seeks to overcome this objection by constructing the wrench so that it will be impossible for the jaws to spring sidewise and twist out of proper relative position and also to prevent their movement together beyond a certain point, and thus avoid the liability of excessive inward movement and consequent fracture.
In constructing the wrench to attain these ends 1 form the shank a with one end adapted to receive the jaws of the bit-brace and at the other end with two spring-arms Z) and c, on which. nut-holding jaws d are formed. The arms I) and c are respectively formed with integral lugs or enlargements b and ,6, which are located on the inner faces of the arms and are formed with square adjacent faces, so that as the arms move toward each other these adjacent faces of the lugs b and means the arms 19 and c, and consequently the jaws 01, maybe moved readily toward each other, it being understood that the arms I) and c are as usual so constructed as to have a tendency to spring apart.
By such a construction it is possible to readily adjust the jaws; but the rigid attachment of the threaded pin 2 with the arm 0 and the lug 0 thereof and the sliding of said arm through the wide space formed by the arm I) and lug Z) insures the true movement of the arms toward and from each other and renders it impossible for them to turn or spring out of proper alinement. This trueness of action being once attained the wrench will last indefinitely and may be used freely and continuously without danger of fracture.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A wrench, having a shank, two spring-arms mounted on the shank and havingeach a jaw, the arms being movable toward and from each other to clamp an instrument between the jaws, each arm having a lug, and the lugs being extended laterally toward each other and having inner faces adapted to engage with each other to limit the movement of the arms toward each other, such lugs being immediately adjacent to the jaws and forming shoulders at the inner ends thereof, a pin haw ing a tapering shank rigidly secured in one arm and in the lug thereof, the pin being eX- tended through said arm and lug and through an opening in the remaining arm and lug, and a nut working on the outer end of the pin, whereby to draw thearms together.
