GEORGE EDEL, OF NEIV ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
FlLE FOR HOLDING LOOSE PAPERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 623,466, dated April. 18, 1899.
Application filed October 6, 1898- 1'0 (0M w/tont it 7ltfby concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE EDEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Files for Holding Loose Papers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in devices for holding loose sheets of paper desired to be kept for future reference-such as bills, letters, memoranda, and the likeand has for its object to provide a device for this purpose which'will receive and hold the papers more satisfactorily than devices of a lik nature now in use.
My invention consists of the novel devices hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings, wherein the same parts are indicated by the same letters throughout both views.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my paper-file, the dotted lines indicating the outline of'a board or backing which may be attached thereto, if desired; and Fig. 2 represents a central vertical section through the said device.
A represents a base-frame which may be of any suitable desired shape, preferably substantially oblong, as shown, in the upper end of which is formed an opening a" for the passage of a hook in suspending the device from a vertical surface, as shown in Fig. 2. In the lower end of this frame A is formed a boss to, having an opening a therethrough, which should preferably be screw-threaded to receive the screw-threaded end I) of a curved rod or sticker 13, having-a sharp tapering point Z2, as shown.
Upon opposite sides of the frame A are formed similarlugs O O,perforated for the pas sage of a pivot pin or rod D. Upon this pivot pin or rod is mounted a swinging frame E, havinga pair of perforated lugs d d through which said pivot-pin passes. The said lugs are rigidly mounted upon said pivot-pin, as
Serial No. 692,833. (No model.)
by means of pins or keys d d, which pass diametrically through openings in bothsaid lugs and said pivot-pin, as shown. Thesaid pivotpin D has a thumb-piece-or handle D upon one end, by means of which the said pivotpin, and with it the swinging frame E, may be turned. This swinging frame E is provided with a short slot E therethrough, so arranged as to pass over the curved rod or sticker B, above described, the curve of the said sticker being struck from the pivotal point of the frame F. as a center. The frame E is provided with a weighted knob F, se-- cured thereto by means of a bolt or rivetF, and this knob serves not only as ahandle for turning the frame over the sticker, but also as a weight to retain the said frame thereupon and to securely hold papers in place.
A represents an elastic disk or washer fitted over the sticker and serving as a cushion at the base thereof.
The frame A may be'suspended from a hook in the wall, as showh in Fig. 2, or may rest in a horizontal or slanting position upon the surface of a desk or table. If desired, the said frame might be secured upon a backing orboard X (indicated by dottedlines in Fig. 1) whether the device is to be suspended from a hook or laid upon a horizontal surface.
In using my device hereinbefore described when it is desired to place a sheet of paper or memorandum thereon the frame E is turned clear of the point of the sticker by grasping either the knob F on said frame or the handle or thumb-piece D on the pivot-pin D. The sheet of paper is then impaled upon the point I) of the sticker B, and the pivoted frame E is allowed to fall. The weight of the frame E, combined with the weight of the knob F, will force the sheet of paper down to the base of the sticker 13, whereon it will be securely held against accidental displacement due to currents of air in the room or through any other cause.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is

a curved impaling-pin rigidly mounted upon said base; of a shaft journaled in said lugs and having a handle upon one end whereby I said shaft; may be turned; a weighted frame 5 rigidly mounted upon said shaft and provided with a slot arranged to pass over said 1 impaling-pin, substantially as described. 1
