NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN S. BROOKS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
COMBINED BAIL AND COVER FOR VESSELS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 622,441, dated April 4, 1899.
Application iiled .Tune 22, 1898. Serial No. 684,192. (No model.)
T0 all 'wh/om, t rita/y concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN S. BROOKS, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Combined Bail and Cover for Yessels, of which the following is'a specification.
My invention relates'to covers forvessels, especially garbage-cans, which are liable to have an ordinary detachable cover left oft or lost by the carelessness of servants and others.
I have provided a cover, as shown by the accompanying drawing, which is a side elevation of my device as applied to a garbagecan.
The body in general, as shown at A, may
be made of galvanized sheet-iron of suitable weight and in the proportions shown. The
cover B should be made enough larger than the body to Work on and off easily and is provided with the guides O, one on each side, made of heavy sheet-iron or wire rod, having a slot or opening, as shown at E, which slot engages an ear or lug D, permanently attached to the body of the vessel, and which ear or lug has a neck to it the slot in the guide and a head sufficiently large to keep the guide in place.
The cover may be removed for emptying or filling the vessel by raising it irst and then letting it turn over to the side of the vessel, as shown by the dotted lines. The construction is so simple and cheap that all vessels that are for sanitary reasons covered are by its use insured that the cover will not be left oft. A lateral slot E may be made from the side of the perpendicular slots to hold the cover down in carrying the vessel, as shown in the drawing.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A vessel provided with a cover and handle, having slotted guides provided with lateral slots attached thereto and vmeans for securing said guides to the body of said vessel forming in the combination a bail and cover.
