A TTOHNEYS NITED STATES" PATENT OFFICE.
VVILKE JANSEN RENKEN, OF COATSBURG, ILLINOIS.
TOOTH-HOLDING DEVICE FOR HARROWS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 621,707, dated March 21, 1899.
Application filed August 30,1898. Serial No. 689,841. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I,WILKE JANSEN REN- KEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ooatsburg, in the county of Adams and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tooth Holding Devices for Harrows, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates. to harrows, and has for its object, among others, a device to advantageously hold and clamp the teethto the construction and arrangement of the same,
which I shall first describe and then point out the novel features in the appended claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a perspective View of a portion of a barrow-beam with my improved device attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a similar View of the holder detached from the beam, and Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional elevation of the device as shown in Fig. 1.
The harroW-beam A is perceptibly rounded on one side, as at B, and provided on its other side with a longitudinally-extending groove 0, forming ribs D.
The holder 10 for the tooth 12, which latter is of the usual spike form, is bifurcated to form holding-arms 13, each provided with an opening 14, extending therethrough from top to bottom, said openings being in alinement with each other and adapted to receive and hold the tooth 12. In its cross-bar or body portion 15 the holder is formed with a thread ed aperture 16, in which is arranged to work the set-screw 17. Now it will be seen that when the holder 10, with the barrow-tooth held by the arms 13, is inserted on thebeam A, as shown in Fig. 1, it may conveniently be held at any place on said beam by the ac tion of the set-screw l7 binding againstthe rear face of the beam. It should also be ob served that when the set-screw binds against the rear face of the harrow-beam the ribs D are forced tightly against the tooth binding it in arms 13 and that the tooth can thus be held at difierent elevations with respect to the beam to cut the earth deeply or lightly.
- The means hereinbefore described for holding the barrow-tooth to the beam are of cheap and efficient construction, enabling in a simple manner the quick adjustment of the tooth to any point on the beam and also the cutting of a deep or light furrow.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat out, is-' The combination with a barrow-beam provided with ribs along its front face, of a toothholder consisting of a cross-bar formed with a screw-threaded aperture and arms arranged to embrace the beam, the said arms having openings at their ends for the reception of the barrow-teeth and being of such a length that the beam may have movement back and forth between the tooth and the cross-bar of the holder, and a set-screw Working in the and hold teeth of diiferent Widths, as and for the purpose set forth.
WILKE JANSEN RENKEN,
