UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH REAL, OF EAST HIG-I-IGATE, VERMONT.
MEANS FOR SECURING SCYTHE-BLADES 0N HANDLES.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, JOSEPH REAL, a citizen of the United States, residing at East; Highgate, in vthe county of Franklin and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Securing Scythe-Blades on Handles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in means for the attachment of scythes to a snathe, irrespective of the shape of the tang thereof, and the primary object of my invention is to provide means whereby scythes with longitudinally extendingvand angular tangs or heels may be adjustably secured to the snathe.
A further object of the invention resides in providing means, whereby scythes with angular and longitudinal tangs may bereadily interchanged on the snathe and secured thereto so that the same may be adjusted to various angles with respect to said snathe.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a securing means for the snathe comprising a locking bolt having a circular band-like head thereon, and a still further object of the invention resides in the provision of a snathe member having cross slots at one end thereof to receive the bandlike head of the bolt when disposed both vertically and horizontally, respectively.
Still another object of the invention resides in providing a device which is ex tremely simple in construction, thereby readily and cheaply manufactured, and one which is very effective and useful in operation.
lVith these and-other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will :be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part .of this application, Figure 1 is -,a fragmentary front elevation of the snathe member showing a scythe blade having an angular tang thereon applied -to use. Fig. 2 is a similar view showinga scythe having a lon- Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 23, 1911.

gitudinal tang thereon applied to use. Fig.
3 is a transverse section as seen on line 3.3, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the snathe member with the scythes and securing means removed therefrom. Fig. 5 is a transverse section as seen on line 55, Fig. 4, and, Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of the locking bolt removed from the snathe.
In carrying out my invention, I shall refer to the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which 1 indicates one end of an extended snathe member or shank used in connection with the ordinary scythe, and 2 indicates a met-allic sleeve secured on said member 1 at the extreme end thereof. The sleeve 2 is provided with a pair of cross slots 3 which register with a pair of cross channels 4 in the member 1, and said member 1 is also provided with an opening 5 extending therethrough at the point of intersection of the cross channels 4. Extending laterally from the base of the sleeve having the cross slots therein, is a shank 6, which shank is provided with a slot .7, the wall of said slot nearest the member 1, being provided with corrugations or teeth 8, and extending through the opening 5 in the member 1, is a bolt 9, which bolt is provided with a semicircular band-like head 10 adapted to fit within the cross channels 4. The free end of said bolt is threaded, as shown at 11, whereby the same may receive a nut 12 to retain said bolt within the member 1, the purpose of which will be hereinafter and more particularly described. Secured to said member 1 a short distance above the sleeve 2, is a metallic strip 13 having a socket 14 therein extending laterally of said member 1, and movably mounted in said socket 14, is a pair of adjusting or spacing blocks orlugs 15 and 16. In using the device in connection with a scythe 17, such as shown is Fig. 1, wherein the tang 18 thereof is disposed at an angle, substantially right angles to the blade proper, the free end of said tang being provided with a right angular or laterally extending portion or lug" 19, the bolt 9 is so disposed in the opening 5 that the band-like head 10 thereof fits in the horizontally disposed channel of said cross channels a. The tang 18 of said scythe may then be disposed in the opening formed by said band-like head and the lug 19 on the free end of said tang entered in the socket 14, either between said blocks 15 and 16 or on either side thereof, whereupon the nut 12 may be turned on the bolt 9 to securely rctain said scythe in the adjusted position. Said scythe may be adjusted to any desired angle by the adjustment of the blocks 15 and 16, whereby said lug 19 may be entered in said socket 14, either between said blocks or on one side or the other thereof. It will also be seen that when it is not desired to use a scythe having an angular tang, a blade 20 having a longitudinally extending tang 21 may be used, and in this connection, the free end of the longitudinal tang 21 is provided with a laterally extending lug 22 which is V-shape in cross section. In using a scythe such as the one last mentioned, the bolt 9 is positioned so that the head 12 thereof is disposed in the vertical channel of the cross channels l, whereupon, the tang 21 may be entered through the opening in said head and the V-shaped lug 22 entered in the notches or teeth 8 in the laterally extending shank 6. By tightening the nut 12 011 the end of the bolt 9 so as to engage the rear face of the member 1, said scythe may be securely clamped to said member 1, and when it is desired to change the angle to which said scythe is disposed with respect to the snathe member 1, the same may be accomplished by the adjusting of the scythe so that the lug 22 will enter the proper notch or tooth in the series 8.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that I have provided a means for securing seythes to a snathe, which means allows the adjustment of the scythe and accommodates scythes having various shaped tangs. It will also be understood that although this device has been described as a means for retaining scythes to a handle, the same may be readily used in connection with any other similar device wherein an adjustable securing means is desired.
It will still further be seen that my device is of such simple construction as to be inexpensively manufactured, and one which is very effective and useful in operation.
Although I have particularly described the various features of the invention, it will be readily understood that various changes in form, proportion and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the inven tion. It must also be here stated that the features of this device may be taken apart and folded so as to require considerably less space than ordinarily required for a scythe, and thus it will be seen that this will be a great aid in the shipping and storing of the device.
What I claim is 1. The combination with a snathe member, a sleeve mounted on one end thereof, said sleeve and snathe member being provided with alining cross channels, a clamping bolt extending through said snathe member and provided with a head adapted to fit in said cross channels, and a shank formed on said sleeve, said shank being provided with a slot, one of the walls of which is provided with teeth, said bolt and slot being adapted to cooperate with one another to retain a blade having a longitudinally extending tang thereon to the handle member; of means also adapted to cooperate with said bolt for retaining a blade having an angular tang to said snathe member.
2. A device of the class described, comprising a snathe member, a sleeve mounted on one end thereof, said sleeve and snathe member being provided with horizontally and vertically arranged intersecting channels, a bolt extending through the snathe member at the point of intersection of said channels, said bolt being provided with a band-like head adapted to fit in said channels and project therebeyond, means to clamp said bolt to the snathe member, means carried on said snathe member adapted to cooperate with said bolt when disposed in the vertical channel for adjustably securing a blade having a longitudinally extending tang to the snathe member, and additional means carried on the snathe member adapted to co-act with said bolt and the head thereof disposed in the horizontal channel to adjustably secure a blade having an angular tang to said snathe member.
3. A device of the class described, comprising a snathe member, a sleeve secured to one end thereof, said sleeve and snathe member being provided with a pair of intersecting channels, a bolt extending through said snathe member at the point of intersection of said channels, said bolt be ing provided with an enlarged band-like head adapted to fit within either of said channels, means to securely clamp the bolt to the snathe member, a pair of blades, one of which is provided with a longitudinally extending tang and the other with an angular tang, means cooperating with the bolt when the same is disposed in one slot for retaining the blade having the longitudinal tang thereon to the snathe member, and additional means cooperating with the bolt when the same is disposed in the opposite slot for retaining said other blade to the snathe member.
4. In a device of the class described, the combination with a snathe member having a pair of cross channels adjacent one end thereof, said member being also provided with an opening therethrough at the point of intersection of said channels; of a bolt extending through the opening and provided with a head adapted to partially enter said channels one at a time, a blade having a tang thereon adapted to be received through the head of said bolt, means to secure the bolt to the snathe member, and
means on said snathe member toengage the 10 free end of said tang and aid in retaining the blade in various adjusted positions.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of tWo Witnesses.
