Arc. HENDRICKS. HOLDER FOR SPRING EAR ROW TEETH.
No. 488,107. Patented Oct. '7, 1890.
I E TOR: WITNESSES: NV N ATTORNEY.
UNITED TATES ATENT OFFICE.
ADAM C. HENDRICKS, OF MARTINSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONEHALF TO ELIZABETH E. CRANE, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
HOLDER FOR SPRING HARROW-TEETH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 438,107, dated October 7, 1890. Application filed February 24, 1890. Serial No. 341,408. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ADAM 0. HENDRICKS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Martinsburg, in the county of Berkeley and State of WVest Virginia, have invented certain new and usefullmprovementsinHoldersforSpring Harrow-Teeth, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved holder or fastening for spring-teeth of harrows, and is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows a spring-tooth held by the fastening, the latter being attached to a part of the barrow-frame. Fig. 2 is a front view of the holder, the spring-tooth here being shown. in section. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal cross-section. Fig. 4 is a view, separate, of the screw-threaded wedge-bar.
The letter A designates a spring-tooth of any Well-known form, such as are used on harrows for land.
The object of this invention is to provide a holder or fastening device by which harrowteeth may be secured and maybe readily adjusted so that the point of the tooth may take into the groundmore or less, as desired.
The holder comprises, essentially, a box B, and awedge-bar C, movable in said box by means of a screw. The box has a base d, on which the barrow-tooth is to rest, a top bar 6 and two sides f, connecting the base and top bar. The top bar is provided with inclines g, one, two, or more. The number is immaterial. The two ends of the box are each provided with a slot h. The wedge-bar O has a flat side 2', which is to bear on the harrowtooth, and a back provided with inclines g, which coact with the inclines on the top bar of the box. It will be seen, therefore, that this wedge-bar must have the same number of inclines as the box-bar. The wedge-bar is provided with a screw-threaded end 70, and a nut Z turns on said end. The wedge-bar O rests loosely in the two slots h, and is movable therein endwise. The harrow-tooth A has position between the wedge-bar and the base of the box, and said tooth preferably rests on the two beads or raised edges d of said base, as shown in Fig. 3. The screw end of the wedge-bar passes through one slot and projects beyond one side of the box, and the nut Z tightens on the said screw and bears against the box-side. A washer 'm may also be used. By turning the nut Z the wedge-bar 0 will be drawn endwise, and the incline g of this bar will draw against the incline g of the box, and thereby the fiat side i of said bar Will press or clamp the tooth A firmly.
This holder is simple, cheap, powerful, and very convenientto adjust. The construction of the box part may be varied from that here shown, and the position or location of the box may be different. My invention therefore is not limited to the particular construction shown.
Having described my invention, I claim- 1. The combination of a barrow-tooth, a box through which the harrow-tooth passes and provided with an incline, a movable wedgebar having an incline, and a screw device to move said bar.
2. A holder for harrow-teeth, consisting of a box having a base and a top bar provided with an incline, a wedge-bar having a fiat side which confronts said base and provided on the opposite side with an incline and having a screw-threaded end, and a nut turning on said end.
3. In a holder for barrow-teeth, the combination of a box havinga base, a top bar provided with an incline and two sides connect ing the base and the top bar and said sides being provided with slots, a wedge-bar resting loosely in said slots and havinga flat side which confronts said base and provided on the opposite side with an incline g, and also having a screw-threaded end, and a nutturning on said end.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ADAM C. HENDRICKS.
