SPECIFICATIGN forming part of Letters Patent No. 620,970, dated March l4, 1899. Application filed May 25, 1898. Serial No- 681,695. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MARGARET L. ROBERTS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Hat, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in hats.
The object of my invention is to produce a neat and attractive hat which may be easily laundered.
The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention.
Figure 1 is aperspective view thereof. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the crown-center removed and the parts in position to be laundered. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the crowncenter.
In the drawings, 4 indicates a brim, band, or body of any desired shape and provided with a central opening, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2. Secured t o brim 4, near the central opening, is the crown 5, which is preferably a single strip of material, one edge of which is gathered about the opening in the brim. The other edge of the crown 5 is provided with a hem 6, through which is passed a gathering-string 7.
The crown-center 8 may be of any desired form, and secured to the under side thereof by a circular row of stitches 9 is a piece 10, preferably larger than the crown-center 8, the arrangement being such that the peripheries of the crown-center 8 and the piece 10 may be separated and the hem 6 of the crown 5 introduced therebetween.
The various parts of the hat may be made of any suitable, preferably wash, material, and the brim 4, crown-piece 8, and piece 10 are preferably stiffened by any suitable ma terial, such as duck or the like.
To assemble the parts shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the ends of the gathering-string are drawn until the hemmed edge of the crown is drawn into a small circle, and the said edge is then introduced between the peripheries of the crown-center S and the piece 10, the piece 10 lying beneath or inside the crown 5. The gathering-string is then tightened and the ends tucked inside the crown, and the parts are then in the position shown in Fig. 1. To separate the parts for laundering, the gathering-string is untied, the crown-center removed, and crown spread out into the position shown in Fig. 2. The parts may then be easily washed, and, what is more important, each part may be easily ironed, each part being easily reached by an iron.
I claim as my invention- 1. A hat consisting of a body, a crown secured thereto, means for gathering or shirring the upper edge of said crown, and a crowncenter adapted to be removably secured to said gathered edge of the crown.
2. A hat consisting of a body, a crown, consisting of a strip of material secured at one edge to said body, a crown-center, and means for detachably securing the upper edge of the crown to the crown-center.
3. A hat consisting of a body, a crown secured thereto, a gathering-string carried by the upper edge of the crown, and a crown-center adapted to be removably held in position by said gathering-string.
4. A hat consisting of a body, a crown secured thereto, a gathering-string carried by the upper edge of said crown, and a crowncenter, consisting of the pieces 8 and 10, between which the upper edge of the crown may be removably secured by means of the gathering-string.
