TRAVELING-RUG.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 620,945, dated March 14, 1899.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, LoUIs MAURICE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Rugs or'Bags, of which the following is a specification.

. My invention relates to improvements in that class of robes, rugs, or coverings which are especially adapted for use by travelers in cold countries. I

The object of my invention is to provide a covering of this character which can be easily put on and off by the user, which will thoroughly protect the lowerlimbs, the lower part of the back, and the stomach of the wearer, and which can be adapted toa recumbent or a sitting posture with equal facility and comfort.

My invention is especially designed for use by drivers whose duties compel them to face cold driving winds.

In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this application, Figure 1 represents a front elevation of my invention, showing its position relative to the human form when in use. Fig. 2 is a perspective view, partly in section, showing the device closed.

In the drawings, 1 represents a cylindrical bag closed at the bottom and open at the top and also provided with a central vertical slit or opening 1 in the front, which extends from the top of the bag to a point slightly below the center. From the bottom of this vertical opening extends partly across the bag a hori-,

zontal cut or opening 1 A flap 2 is formed by the vertical and horizontal openings, which is thrown open when the bag is being put on and serves as a closure when the bag is in use, suitable buttonholes being provided to engage the buttons on the front of the opposing portion 1. In order that the portion 19 maybe drawn close to the figure of the wearer and to relieve the strain on the buttons and buttonholes, I provide straps 1 and buckles 2 on the parts 1 and 2, respectively.

An auxiliary triangular shaped flap 3 is secured at the side of the main portion of the bag or may be formed therewith and is adapted to be folded across the front, so as to cover the vertical and horizontal openings l and 1 and to form a double covering over the stomach and loins of the wearer, as shown in Fig. 2. The upper corner of the flap 3 is provided with a strap 3 which passes part way around the waist and is secured by a buckle 3 which is attached to the outside of said flap at a point over the left hip of the wearer.

In order that the bag may be both warm and water-tight, I preferably make it with a wool lining and a rubber or other waterproof-Ina terial exterior. In practice I have found that sheep-pelts with the wool side in and an oilskin covering secure the best results. The two materials may be sewed or otherwise permanently secured together throughout or they may be separable.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'

A bag of the character described having a lining of wool or the like, and a waterproof exterior, and provided with a vertical cut ex tending from the upper edge part way down the front, and a cut extending at right angles from the lower end of the vertical out, said cuts forming a flap at one side, a cover for said flap, said cover having an extension adapted to overlie the aforesaid cuts, and means for securing said extension at the side of the bag, substantially as set forth.
