Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AMANDA BERNHARDT, QF NEWV YORK, N. Y.
fDETERGENT.
PECIFIGATIO N forming part of Letters Patent No. 620,407, dated February 28, 1899.
Application filed April 5 j 1898- Serial No. 676,550. (No specimena To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, AMANDA BERNHARDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, (Brooklyn,) in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Washing Compound, of which the following is a full and complete specifica tion, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to washing compounds; and it has for its object to provide an improved compound of this character which will be especially adapted for effective use in washing and cleansing clothes, which will ob= viate the labor of rubbing and which will im= part an extreme whiteness to the clothes with out exercising any deleterious effect upon the fabric.
My improved compound consists of the following ingredients combined in the proportions specified: lye, one per cent; mineral oil, six-sixteenths of one 'per cent; bluing, three-sixteenths of one per cent; paraffinwax, ninety-eight and seven-sixteenths of one per cent.
In compounding the above ingredients the paraffin is melted by heating in a suitable vessel. The lye, oil, and bluing are thoroughly intermixed in a suitable vessel by stirring or agitating in any suitable manner, the oil being first placed in the vessel as a base and the lye and bluing afterward poured ontothe oil during the process of interinixing and agitating. The mass of intermixed lye, oil, and bluing is then poured onto the dissolved par affin and the whole is thoroughly intermixed by stirring or agitating in any suitable manner. The compound may be then poured into suitable molds, in which it will solidify as it cools.
In use a tablespoonful of the compound is simply placed in the water with a bar of wash-- ing-soap of ordinary or standard size, when the compound will dissolve and act upon the clothes to thoroughly cleanse and whiten the same.
The molded block of compound may be simply scraped or shaved to produce the table spoonful or other proportionate quantity desired for use.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1 An improved compound for use in washing clothes, consisting of lye, oil, bluing, and paraflin, compounded substantiallyin the proportions set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 4th day of-April, 1898.
AMANDA BERNHARDT.
