L To @ZZ wiem it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHAUNCEY S. BIGELow, a citizen of the United States, residing at Toledo, Lucas county, Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dental Cabinets, 0f which the following is a specification.
Small portablecases provided with drawers ortrays for holding instruments for dentists work are used bygstudents in dental colleges, and heretofore when such students have come to the active practice of their profession such cases and drawers jhave proved inadequate and it has been necessary to discard them for larger and more practical cases or cabinets, thus entailing considerable expense. Dentists who practice their profession at different places usually provide Ythemselves with small portable cases in addition to the larger and more convenient cabinets with which theiry regular place of business is furnished, which also involves expense.
My invention relates to and its object is to provide a cabinet for dentists in which a portable case of instruments may be detachably secured, making the case a part of a complete and convenient cabinet, with provision for the removal from such cabinet of the portable cases and for locking the portable case either in position in its cabinet or when removed therefrom, thus obviating the necessity for discarding the students case and the necessity for the purchase of an extra portable instrument-case by the practicing dentist, also dispensing with the change of instruments from one set of drawers to another. I attain these objects by means of the devices and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, and shown and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, made part hereof, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of a dental cabinet embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a vertical sectional elevation of said cabinet on lines A B, Fig. l; Fig. 3, a central vertical sectional elevation of the portable instrumentcase, hereinafter referred to; Fig. 4, the locking-pin for said instrument-case, hereinafter referred to; and Fig. 5, a perspective view of said case with one of the drawers open and its bottom or instrument-holder elevated, as
hereinafter described. Fig. 6 is a rear view of the dental cabinet embodying my invention.
Like numerals indicate like parts throughout the drawings.
In the ldrawings is shown a dentists cabinet having a compartment l, provided with a door 2,`of glass or otherwise, in front, and another door 3 at back. 4 is a portable instrument-case adapted to be removably contained within said compartment. The door 2 may be hinged upon one of its vertical edges or, preferably, may be raised and slid into the inclined pocket 2,where it will be out of sight and out of the way. In either case this door should be provided with a suitable means for fastening it. (Not shown in the drawings.) The rear door 3 may be either hinged or, in case it is unnecessary to open it frequently, may be secured in place with screws. Incase this door is hinged it should be provided with a suitable lock or other equivalent means for securing the same. The rectangular instrument-case 4 conforms to the space 1 prepared for it within the cabinet and is provided with a series of drawers or tills 5 for the reception of instruments and supplies, and such of the drawers as are designed to receive the smaller instruments are provided with a false bottom 6, (see Figs. 3 and 4,) grooved or corrugated, as shown, each groove or depression serving as a holder for an instrument. These false bottoms are provided with wedge-shaped end pieces 6, the broader part being in front. At their rear the pieces 6 are pivoted, as at 6", (see Fig. 3,) and are held normally elevated byspring 6. Through the rear rail of each of the drawers and in line with each other is abore or opening into which may be dropped the locking-pin '7. This locking-pinnear its top is provided with a circumferential groove, as at 7, which maybe engaged by the forked extremity of bolt 8 of lock 9, secured in the top of the case.
The operation of my device is as follows: Assuming that the case is in use independently of the cabinet, the drawers may all be locked simultaneously by slipping the locking-pin 7 into place and shooting the bolt 8 into engagement with the groove 7" When IOO one of the drawers is pulled open, the spring 6c elevates the false bottom 6, which swings upwardly upon its pivot 6b, throwing the points or handles of the various instruments within convenient reach. When the drawer is pushed back into place, the wedge-shaped pieces 6, sliding against the case, force the pivoted false bottom downward upon the bottom of the drawer. When the case is notin use portably, the locking-pin is removed and the case is slipped through the rear door 3, which is then secured. Now by opening the door 2 the drawers are exposed and the instrument-case 4 is utilized as part of the cabinet and without removing the instruments from their accustomed places. Thus it will be seen that by my invention and by manufacturing the cabinets and the instrumentfcases with reference to each other the purchaser of the instrument-case alone may afterward utilize it and avoid considerable expense when he comes to the purchase of the cabinet.
I disclaim the general form and arrangement of the cabinet here shown, as it is the invention of another and is made the subject of an application for a Design Patent concurrent herewith.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
l. In a dental cabinet, a compartment, a portable case of drawers for instruments litted to and removably secured within said compartment, a rear door to said compartment adapted to receive said portable case, a front door to said compartment adapted to permit the opening of the drawers of said case, and independent means for locking the drawers of said case, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a dental-instrument case, a series of drawers placed therein, one above the other, and each one having a perforation through its rear end, and a locking-pin provided with a groove which is passed down through the top of the case and the opening in each one of the drawers, combined with a sliding bolt which has its inner end to engage with the groove in the locking-pin, substantially as shown.
3. In a case, a drawer, a pivoted bottom piece in said drawer, a spring adapted to normally throw the forward kpart of said pivoted bottom piece upwardly, said bottom piece provided with a wedge-shaped piece adapted to contact with the case and to depress the bottom piece, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
4. An instru ment-case comprising a frame, and a series of drawers therein, a bottom in each of said drawers, a spring placed beneath the bottom of the drawers, and pivots placed at the rear end of the bottom so that as the drawers are drawn outward the front end of the pivoted bottom will automatically rise, and as the drawer is closed the bottom is again depressed by having its outer end come in contact with the frame, substantially as shown.
5. An instrument-case, comprising a frame and a series of drawers therein, combined with spring-actuated bottoms which are pivoted in the rear ends of the drawers, and which bottoms automatically rise and fall at their outer ends as the drawers are opened and closed, substantially as described.
