SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 619,607, dated February 14, 1899.

To all whom it may concern.'

Be it known that I, RUTHEREORD H. PAX- TON, of Florence, in the county of Fremont and State of Colorado, have invented-a new and Improved Pad-Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention is a paper-pad holder designed especially to be hung vertically on a door or wall, so that persons calling may leave messages upon the pad. For example, such persons may leave orders for merchandise or calls for a physician.

This speciiication is the disclosure of one form of my invention, while the claims deiine the actual scope of the invention.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof. Fig. 3 is a cross-section, and Fig. 4 is a similar View of a modification.

The form of the invention shown in the iirst three figures has a back or body plate 5, whereto is removably attached the head 6, the head .being located at the upper end of the back or body plate 5. The head 6 is provided with a sign or advertisement 7.

Attached to the left-hand edge of the plate 5 are two eyes 8, that receive the left-hand side bar of the U-shaped clamping-frame 9, whereby said frame is mounted to swing over the body-plate 5 or outward therefrom, as shown in Fig. 1. The lower end of the plate 5 carries a stop-hook 10, that limits the backward movement of the frame 9, causing the frame to lie around the edge of the backboard. The parallel side bars of the frame 9 are joined to each other by resilient steel bands or strips 11, that extend transversely parallel with each other and serve the double purpose of holding the pad 12 firmly in place and of marking lines or divisions thereon in which the several messages may be written. Thev bands or strips 11 are joined to the frame 9 by spring-helices, as shown. The pad 12 is laid on the body 5 with its cardboard back resting against the same, and the pad is Serial No. 673,962. to the body 5 and projecting inward over the cardboard back of the pad and beneath the paper sheets thereof. In fixing the pad in position the pad is placed on the body-plate and the tongue engaged with the back of the pad. Then the frame 9 is moved down to bear on the pad with the bands 11. The lefthand side bar of the frame 9 has its forward end 9"L turned laterally to hold the frame from sliding in the adjacent eye 8 and also to engage the body 5 and limit the swinging of the frame.

The frame 9 has its free side bar provided with an upward and inward extension 15, the inwardly-running part of which is fast in the free or right-hand end of a bar 16, that is pivoted at its opposite end to the head 6. The bar 16 carries a bowspring 17, that bears on the pad 12 to assist in holding the same and also to tend to throw the bar 16 and frame 9 upward, as illustrated by the dotted lines in Fig. 1. The free portion of the bar 16 is pro vided with a pin 18, which is engaged by a recessed spring-catch 19, held to vibrate on the head 6 and within a recess 20 therein. The catch 19 holds the bar 16, and consequently the frame 9, in the operative position shown by full lines in Fig. 1. Upon releasing the catch 19 the spring 17 throws the bar and frame outward. It may be observed that under these conditions the holder may be thrown open to completely expose the sheets of the pad and permit ythe manipulation of such sheets, while the pad will be yet held in place by the action of the spring-tongue 14.

The modification shown in Fig. 4. does not differ from the first-described form except that the steel bands 11 are replaced by elastic cords or bands 21, that are strained between the side bars of the frame 9.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination of a bodyplate, a head iixed thereto, a clamping-frame hinged at one side to the body-plate so as to swing toward and from the same, a bar pivoted to the head at the side adjacent to the hinge of the frame and connected at its free end with the free porfurther held by a spring-tongue 14, secured tion of the frame, a spring attached to the bar IOO and tending to throw the bar away from the body-plate, and a catch carried by the head and holding the frame against the body-plate.

2. The combination of a body-plate,a springtongue secured thereto and capable of en gaging the stiff back of a paper pad, and a clamping-frame mounted to swing toward and from said body-plate.

3. A paper-pad holder having a body-plate and a clamping-frame hinged thereto, and provided with bands or strips run across the frame and adapted to lie against the face of the pad.

4. A paper-pad holder having a bod y-plate, a head attached to one end thereof, a bar mounted to swing on the head transversely to the body-plate, and a framemounted on the body-plate to swing toward and from the same and having connection with the bar.

5. A paper-pad holder having abody-plate, a head attached thereto, a bar mounted to swing on the head transversely to the bodyplate, a spring pressing the bar to throw the same away from the body-plate, a catch serving to hold the bar against the force of the spring, and a frame mounted on the bodyplate to swing toward and from the same and having connection with the bar.
