MONKEY-WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 619,546, dated February 14, 1899.
Application filed December 27, 1897. Serial No. 663,468. (No model.)

Beit known that I, JOHN K. DANIELS, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in wrenches for ordinary use for holding and turning nuts, bolts, 85o., the object being to provide means for quickly and readily adjusting the jaws of the wrench to the desired size and to hold the same in set position.
To this end my invention consists v in providing means for accomplishing these purposes, and is substantially as follows:
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my wrench, showing the jaws partially open. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, showing a portion of the casing removed and a portion of the working parts in longitudinal cross-section; and Fig. 3isavertical cross-section taken on the line X X, looking toward the handle.
In the drawings, letA represent the wrench, which is made of iron or other suitable material and consisting of the fixed jaw B,mount ed upon the shank portion 2, and sliding jaw O, whichis slidablymounted upon the shank 2 and provided with a rearwardly-projecting supplemental shank 3, which passes along the top of said shank 2 and into the groove of the handle 5, which is cast solid with the shank 2 and has the bowl portion E located between said handle 5 and shank 2.
On the under face of the supplemental shank 3 are cut the gear-teeth G, constituting a toothed rack, which meshes with the gear 7, which is located in the bowl E and mounted upon the pin 8, which is journaled on the side 9 and the cover-plate 10 of said bowl and handle.
Cast solid with the gear 7, on either side of the face thereof, are the pinions 11 and 12, which mesh with the toothed split cam 13, which is mounted upon the pin 28, which in turn is journaled in the frame 24. The split cam is provided with an operating-handle 14, which is cast solid therewith, the same having a releasing-spring 15, which is mounted upon the handle 5 and fastened to the same]` by means of the rivets 16, the same having its upper end 17 bearing against the grooved portion 18 of said arm. The cover-plate 10 of the handle 5 is fastened bylneans of screws 19.
Mounted in the handle 5 by means of rivets 20 to the upper face of the groove 4 and within radial reach of the toothed rack portion 21 is the spring toothed rack 22, which is fastened in the recess 23 of the frame portion 24. This rack is provided with teeth which correspond with the teeth of the rack 21 and also with the thumb-operating setcam 25, which is j ournaled in the slot 26 upon the pin 27, which passes through the handle and frame portion of the device. Thus upon shifting the sliding head O against a nut or bolt, (not shown,) so as to set `the same, the thumb -cam 25 is depressed by either the thumb or llinger of the hand, whereby the sprin g retaining-rack 22 is depressed,the teeth thereof engaging the teeth 21 of the arm 3, thereby holding the head O against the nut.
In the operation of my improved device the handle 4 and the arm 14 are gripped in the hand, the arm 14 being pressed until the sliding head O is set against the nut or bolt, when the thumb-cam 25 is depressed, thereby setting the rack-pawl 22 in engagement with the toothed arm 3. The wrench is thus in readiness to be operated as any ordinary wrench. When it is desired to release the wrench from its grasp or hold, the arm 14 is depressed, carrying with it by means of the split cam 13 the pinions 11 and 12, the gear l7, the toothed rack 6,and the slide-head O, which allows the pawl 22 to spring out of clearance with the arm 3, whereupon the arm 14 is released, the nut, bolt, or other like article is freed, and the sliding head O is allowed to be reversed by means of the spring 15, which carries the arm 14 up, releasing the parts of the wrench,
which are again in readiness for service or use.
Having described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. In a device of the class described, the combination of the xed jaw B and sliding jaw O having a shank 3 which constitutes a toothed rack upon its lower face, and meshes with intermediate gearing, which in turn meshes with the split cam having an engaging rack `on its upper face; said cam being formed with a handle 14, by which the slid- IOO ing head is operated; the spring-controlled toothed rack 22, located in the frame portion of said Wrench Within operating reach of I[he toothed rack on the upper face of said shank; and the means for setting said rack 22 in engagement with the toothed rack on the n pper face of said shank, when the sliding jaw is set.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with the iXed jaw and shank thereof of the sliding jaw,'shank and gearing; the gnideway for said sliding shank; the intermediate gearing which meshes with said shank-gearing; the operating-cam which meshes with said intermediate gearing, and the spring-controlled arln therefor, so construoted as to automatically release said sliding jaw, and the Cain and the means for setting the same in retaining position, thereby holding the sliding jaw set.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination with the :fixed jaw and shank therefor, having the sliding jaW mounted thereon; of the sliding-jaw shank, which oonstitutes a toothed rack upon its lower face, and engaging teeth upon its upper face; the intermediate gearing which meshes with said lower raokand the operating toothed caln, which meshes with said gearing; the springeontrolled handle for operating said sliding jaw by means of said intermediate gearing; the guideway formed in the handle and framework of said Wrench for supporting said operating gearing and shank and the retaining means for holding said sliding head set.
