S. WYTRWAL.
MONKEY WRENCH.
APPLECATXOIE FILED MAI 1.17, 29!?- Pateute Dec. 17, 1918.
35 1 G/HZOWW STANISLAW WYTRWAL, OF SCRANTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
MONKEY-WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 17, 1918.
Application filed March 17, 1917. Serial No. 155,443.
I '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STANIsLAw WYTRWAL, a citizen of the United States, resident of Scranton, county of Lackawanna, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Monkey- VVrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in wrenches, and has as its special object the provision of means whereby a movable jaw may be securely held at any adjusted position along the shank by automatically opcrating means.
A further object is to provide auxiliary means whereby the movable jaw may be locked or clamped rigidly with relation to the shank in addition to the main holding means.
These and other like objects are attained 'by the novel design, construction and combination of parts hereafter described and shown in the accompanying drawing, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a wrench made in accordance with the invention, parts being in section to show the construction.
Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a fragmental sectional view similar to that of Fig. 1, but showing the parts in another position, and
Fig. 4: is a sectional view taken on line -i4c of Fig. 1.
The wrench comprises a rigid shank 10 having an integrally formed head or jaw 11 at one end, and a handle 12 at the other, these parts being of the usual construction.
Slidably engaged with the shank 10 is a movable jaw 14 having a pivoted dog 15, the pin 16 of which passes transversely through the sides of the movable jaw.
Another pin 17 acts as a fulcrum for the lever 18, fulcrumed in the slot 21 formed in the jaw 14:, and having a curved outstanding projection 19 furnished with a knob or head 20 at one end, the other end being hingedly engaged with a link 22 encircling the dog 15 and being held in relation thereto by means of the recesses 23 formed. in the sides of the dog 15, the dog being normally held in engaging position with the teeth 25 by means of the flat spring 26 secured in the recess 27 formed in the movable jaw.
The opposite side of the bar or shank 10 is formed with a plurality of fine projections or corrugated surfaces 28 adapted to engage with corresponding corrugations 29 formed in the rear element 30 of the movable jaw 14.
A hub 31 extends outwardly from the rear element 30, the same being screw-threaded and adapted to receive the knurled headed screw 32, which is of sullicient length as to engage with the shank through the hub whereby the movable jaw may be held in an adjusted position.
In operation, the wrench being applied to a nut or other article to be turned, the movable jaw 14 is adjusted by hand into engagement with the opposite side of the article contacting with the fixed jaw 11, whereupon the dog 15 will engage with the teeth 25 holding the same rigidly in position for operation.
When it is desired to remove or release the movable jaw 14, the same is accomplished by depressing the finger knob 20, whereby the dog 15 is raised out of engagement with the teeth 25 allowing the jaw to slide along the shank.
At the same time, the screw 32 may be used to engage the movable jaw with the shank at any desired point, forming in effect an auxiliary clamping means therefor.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A wrench including its handle, relatively large ratchet teeth upon one side of its shank and relatively small teeth upon the opposite side thereof, a jaw formed at one end of the shank, a movable jaw slidable upon said shank to and from said stationary jaw, a pawl carried by the movable jaw for engaging the larger of the ratchet teeth and preventing movement of the movable jaw, a handle carried by the movable jaw assisting in operating the wrench, a threaded stem carried by the shank and threaded in said movable jaw, the threads of said stem adapted to engage the smaller of the ratchet teeth, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature.
STANI SLAW WYTRWAL.
