NEEDLE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent N 0. 619,229, dated February 7, 1899.
Application filed July 16, 1898. Serial No. 686,119. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEPHEN S. ROSZELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lexington, in the county of Fayette and State of Kentucky, have invented new and useful Improvements in Needles, of which the following is a specification,
My invention relates to improvements in needles; and itconsistsin a needle constructed as hereinafter shown and described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
The accompanying drawing is a view of a needle embodying my invention, showing the thread in the act of being inserted.
My needle is adapted more especially for use as a surgical needle, though it may be used with advantage for other purposes, such as general use in families and for sewing leather in the making and repairing of harness, boots and shoes, (he.
Referring now to the drawing, A is the stem of the needle, which is shaped and formed according to the particular use the needle is intended for. The butt-end orhead of the needle is provided with a cylindrical tubular socket having a contracted thread-opening B in its upper end and its lower enlarged end opening downwardly and outwardly through the side of the needle, as illustrated. A longitudinally-extending slot 8 is made through the wall of the tubular socket and connects the upper contracted and the lower enlarged ends of the socket to permit the thread to be passed laterally through the slot within the socket and its knotted end to be seated in the upper end of the socket and entirely inclosed thereby. This construction, while permitting the lateral placement of the thread in the socket, holds the knotted end firmly in place after it is seated therein against lateral displacement, while at the same time the thread and the knot are readily removable from the tubular socket by a lateral pull thereupon, and should the thread become broken or is cut, as is usual in sewing, the remaining portion is readily and easily removed from the socket by a lateral and backward pull thereon.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat ent, is=
An improved needle comprising a body having a pointed end and a head provided with a cylindrical tubular thread-socket, the said tubular socket having a contracted threadopening in its upper end and an enlarged end opening outward and downward through the side of the needle, the wall of the said tubular socket having a contracted longitudinal slot connecting the upper contracted and the lower enlarged opening in the end of said socket, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
STEPHEN S. ROSZELL.
