UNITED STATES- PATENT -OFFICE.
WVILLIAM D. KILBOURIV, OF PUEBLO, COLORADO.
PAPER-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 618,987, dated February '7, 1899.
Application filed January 13, 1898. berial No. 666,565. (No model.) i
To all whom it may concern.-
Be itknown that I, \VILLIAM D. KILBOURN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pueblo, Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is designed to provide a port able newspaper-holder capable of being folded into a small com pass and particularly adapted for use at the table to hold the newspaper while the reader is dining.
My object is to provide a very simple device, of few parts, so as to be economical to make and adapted to be folded. up, so as to occupy little space in the grip or hand-bag.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View showing the invention Fig. 2 shows it in folded position. Fig. 3 is a detail. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 show modifications.
I provide a support A, havinga hooked end a, adapted to fit over the edge of the table and keep the support from moving. The frame B is of rectangular shape and has a swiveled connection centrally of its lower end with a pivoted stud b. The swiveled connection allows the frame to be moved to change the inclination relatively to the reader, while the pivoted connection of the stud with the support A permits it to be folded down upon the support when not in use. The frame is provided with pivoted arms 0, adapted to be turned outwardly to form a support for the newspaper, and when not in use these arms,
bracket is folded up between the side walls of the frame. In order to hold the news paper to the frame, the bracket 0 is provided with a spring pressure-plate D, which bears against the newspaper and clamps it against the walls of the frame. This spring-plate is normally in a folded position against the bracket 0.
The parts maybe made of any suitable material and of any convenient size.
The device presents a very simple compact holder, very effective in use, and capable of being folded into a very'small compass.
In Fig. 4: I show a modification of the frame B, in which I use L-shaped arms c which when extended serve to better support the newspaper or other article to be sustained. I form the pivoted stud b with a shoulder 19 and thicken the lower bar of the frame 13, so as to make a stronger construction.
In Fig. 5 I have shown a modification for adjusting the frame B to any angle desired. This consists of a block 1, moved back and forth by a thumb-screw, with an interposed spring to put proper tension upon the parts. By adjusting the thumb-screw the frame is tilted to the front or rear, as may be required.
In Fig. 6 I have shown a modification of the form of springfor giving tension to the plate D the spring 3 encircling the pivot 2 of the plate D being secured at each end to the plate D and at its middle to the pivot 2. I
The support A on its under face and at its hooked portion may be covered with felt or other material to prevent scratching of th table.
What I claim is- I 1. A holder for newspapers and the like, consisting of a horizontal support adapted to rest upon the surface of the table and having a hooked end to engage the table, a stud pivote'd directly to the opposite end of said support on a horizontal pivot, a frame swiveled at its lower end upon said stud and adapted to be folded directly upon ,the horizontal support with said stud, a support for the edge of the newspaper or the like secured to the lower part of the frame, a spring-clamp for holding the paper to the frame, and arms extending from the sides of the frame, said arms being adapted to be folded inward when not in use.
2. A holder for newspapers and the like consisting of a horizontal support adapted to rest upon and reniovably engage the table, a the paper to the frame, substantially as destud pivoted to the opposite end of said supscribed. 10 port upon ahorizontal pivot, a frame swiveled In testimony whereof I aifix my signatur at its lower end upon said stud so as to be in presence of two witnesses. folded therewith directly upon the support or WILLIAM D. KILBOURN.
to turn on said stud, a support for the edge 'W'itnesses:
of the newspaper secured to the lower part JONATHAN B. KILBOURN,
of. the frame and a spring-clamp for holding MARY A. KILBOURN.
