T0 ALL WHOM IT MAY GONCERN:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL SHEA, of Corry, in the county of Erie, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certan'new and luseful Improvements in Barrels or Tanks;
to the lettersrofreference marked thereon, making a. part of this specification.
v In the annexed drawings, represents a barrel of the ordinary shape and made of any suitable size. This barrel is composed of a series of staves, B BIB, with head, D, and bottom, E, and held together with the hoops C. My invention has for' its objects, in the main, the construction ofn barrel or tank ivith a less number of hoops than is now'l commonly used, and the formation of said barrel or tank in a more substantial manner. For these objects I construct a metallicdowel, a, of a slightly curved forni, and forma1 feather" on each end thereof. One of these dowelsis passed in an opening made for that purpose in the edge-of one of the staves B, and the other endof the dowel ispas'sed in the opening in the adjoining Vs i insert-'ed vand connects the two stoves they are held together by means of the ffeathers on the end.` Each adjoining stave of the barrel is thus connected, as seenvinFignre 3, and obviates the necessity of using but few hoops. In connecting the staves `I may use one or more doivels by placing them at suitable distances apart, 'but in ordinary barrels I find the use of one quite sulicient. The head and bottom of the barrel, D and E, are made of thicker material than is 'common in the use thereof` and form a flange, x, on the eeutre of their peripheries', which passes around the entire head and bottom. There is a groove made in the barrel for `the insertion of the said flange, so when it is inserted there is a. d'ouble shoulder formed thereby, whichv gives the barrel additional strength. y
v 'Having thus fully desoribed my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Securing the head and bottom, D and E, in the barrel by means of tle Haugen: and 'grooveg as herein described and for the purposes set-forth. f
2. Securing the staves of the barrel or tank together by means of the dowel a, feathered on both ends, in the manner as specified.
SAML SHEA- Witnesses: I
C. M. ALEXANDER, J. M. MASON.l
and dohereby declare that the followl. ling is a. full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, land tav-e, so that when the dowel is oncev
