UNITED STATES PATENT CEEICEQ FRANKLIN LENZNER, CF ACASS CITY, MICHIGAN.
MOTO R-FAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of LetterS Patent NO. 616,712, dated December 27, 1898. Application led December Z, 1897. Serial No. 660,517. (No model.)
To aZZ whom t may concern;
Be it known that I, FRANKLIN LENZNEE, of Cass City, in the county of Tuscola and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Motor-Fan, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention is a fan adapted to be placed in apartments, particularly over ones bed, so that persons beneath the fan may be kept cool without any more exertion than is required to wind the mechanical motor with which the invention is equipped.
This specification is the disclosure of one form of my invention, while the claims define the actual scope thereof.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is aperspective view of the invention, showing it applied to a bedstead. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the fan, showing the means for-extending the blades thereof. Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken through said means. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary elevation illustrating the fan, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view showing the wheel by which the fan-blades are extended and contracted. Y f
My invention is shown as applied to a bedstead; but it is obvious that it may be supported and applied in other ways. The mechanical motor is mounted in a casing 11,
. which is suitably attached to the bed.
The fan is provided with two blades 39, which may `have any desired construction and which are supported on arms, each formed of two runs of wire 37 and 38, joined at their outer ends by cross-bars 40, one of which is shown in full lines both in Figs. l and 2 and one of which is shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2. The runs 37 and 38 on each fan-arm are braced at their inner ends by the respective bars 40, similar to the bars 40.` The arms of the fan-blades pass through a flat open-end casing V4l, and the wires 38 being of serpentine or undulatory form mesh with oppositelyextending lateral fingers 42, carried on a wheel 43, fixed upon a spindle 44, mounted in the casing 41. By these lmeans the arms of the fan-blades may be moved oppositely and simultaneously, so as to advance the blades 39 toward and from each other, and thereby regulate the sweep of the fan. The
casing 4l has the tube 24 rigidly attached thereto, so that the casing, and consequently the fan, may be connected with the spindle 25. By means of a key applied to the spindle 44 the blades of the fan may be adjusted.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. In a fan, the combination of a casing, a gear-wheel mounted therein, two fan-blades, and an arm secured to each fan-blade and passing through the casing and meshing with the gear, so that the larms may be extended and contracted by the action of the gear.
2. In a fan, the combination of a casing, two fan-blades, two arms secured respectively to the blades, each arm having a serpentine or undulatory portion, and a gear wheel mounted in the casing and engaged at opposite points by said serpentine or undulatory portions, the gear-wheel having fingers projecting laterally from each side thereof to engage with said serpentine or undulatory portions.
3. The combination of a casing, two fanarms mounted to slide therein, a gear-wheel meshing with said arms to move the same, and a fan-blade carried by each arm.
4. The combination of a casing, a gear-v wheel mounted therein, two fan-blades, and
two arms respectively carrying the blades and slidable in the casing, each arm being composed of two runs of wire, one run of each arm being serpentine in form so as to mesh with the gear-wheel and receive the movement thereof. p
