UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE WASHINGTON ISAAOS, JR., OF NEW YORK, N.. Y.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 182,023, dated September 12, 18 76; application filed August 4, 1875. I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1,,GE0RGE WASHINGTON IsAAos, Jr., of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain novel and. useful Improvements in the Mode of Arranging and Operating Rowlocks for Club-Boats and others, to regulate the length of the stroke of the oarsman; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are lettered to correspond with and form a part of the specification.
To enable those skilled in the mechanic arts to construct, arrange, and operate the same, I will describe it as follows, to wit:
V Figure 1 is a plan view of the middle section of va club-boat, showing the top thereof.
A is a stationary or fixed seat. B is a footboard or stretcher, which operates horizon tally in grooves or slides in the sides of the boat at w w. The said board is also secured by a reciprocating bed, F, which is moved by the feet of the oarsman in the direction of D, and by the spring f in the opposite direction of G. The reciprocating sliding bed F operates upon a strip, E, secured to the keclson or bottom of the boat.
at d are outriggers, secured to the sides of the boat, and made of hollow tubes which may be formed so as to constitute an integral part of the slits c c, in which the shanks of the sliding rowlocks operate backward and forward in a right line parallel with the sides of the boat. These reciprocating rowlocksa a are secured by any mechanical device to the traveling beds b b, which move back and forth upon the slitted ways a c by means of guy-ropes g g passing through the tubes d d, and secured to the traveling beds b b of the rowlocks a a at the outer ends of said ropes, while the inner or opposite ends of the ropes g g are fastened to the sliding bed F, and spiral springs f f upon the stationary strip E or keelson. c e are braces to support the tubular outriggers with their reciprocating rowlocksa it.
Having described the individual parts of my invention, I will here state that its novelty consists of Outriggers extending from the sides of the boat outward, and provided with adjustable rowlocks to regulate the length of the stroke of the oars, in combination with a movable foot-board or stretcher, B, and springs ff- Therefore, what I claim as novel and useful, and wish to protect by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
The Outriggers d d, provided with slitted ways 0 c, reciprocatin g rowlocks a a, secured to the movable beds b b, guy-ropes g g, and
braces e e, in combination with the adjustable foot-board or stretcher B, sliding bed F, springs ff, and stationary seat A, all arranged and operating in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
